Education ALWAYS helps, in ANY market! I'm not familiar with Merrell Institute, having been practicing real estate on the East & West coast, rather than the midwest. However, I can say you are on the righ track.

I agree that education is always a great idea and a good course will have a return far above the purchase price. The biggest bang for your buck are a few star power CDs IMO. I get the new CDs on a monthly basis and always learn something that I can immediately implement. These folks have some AMAZING ideas for most any problem- http://www.gostarpower.com
Haven't tried them, however education, via the web, cd rom, and traditional live classes all have their own purpose and strength. I believe that anyone can add to their knowledge base, by taking education to maintain and improve their skills in this marketplace.
Education doesn't even have to cost anything. We have hundreds of free links for courses at www.appraisaltraining.com and www.nyinspectoreducation.com All education, if used to benefit oneself has a positive purpose.
