WordPressI bought it.  I'm reading it.

ColumbusBestBlog.com (my other blog) is not going to have this "DUMMY" to kick around anymore.

I had a gift card for Barnes and Noble and it was priced at 30% off.  I could not resist it.

WordPress for Dummies by Lisa Sabin-Wilson Anyone read it?

Last Dummies book I purchased was about html...HTML 4 FOR DUMMIES the only Dummies book I have ever NOT enjoyed reading. I  use it as a reference book, when I have to but I have enjoyed reading a couple of Dummies books cover to cover in the past, about computers.

I am in chapter two of WordPress FOR DUMMIES.  No big revelations yet... none of the things that stump meCowtown FOR Dummies and keep the lmost 18 month old ColumbusBestBlog.com stuck in it's tracks.

I get to skip chapters three through five because they are about WordPress.com and my blog is a WordPress.org blog. I will feel like I am accomplishing something!

What I am learning includes the three different flavors of WordPress include:

WordPress.com is vanilla

WordPress.org is chocolate

WordPress MU is Neopolitan ...  and it is pronounced WordPress em-you

and in fact there is a version for big companies with big bucks and the author of WordPress FOR DUMMIES,  Lisa Sabin -Wilson doesn't even give it an ice cream flaver...it is "Enterprise Edition" and it costs big bucks. Or bucks anyway...

I know I did NOT understand the difference between the vanilla and the chocolate before I started ColumbusBestBlog.com on December 31, 2006... I know I did not really understand the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org when I started the WordPress group on ActiveRain.  I might have limited the group to WordPress.org users had I understood.  The group is for both vanilla and chocolate...  and I suppose Neopolitan...  anyone doing a WordPress MU site?

Why would an end user, like yourself, want to run a multi-user verion of Wordpress?  Watch out ActiveRain, here comes ActiveMaureen!  ;-)

I don't think I said I would want to run an MU.. Did I? It's in the book, in the chapters I've read. I think if she has chapters about WorPress MU I can safely skip them, or loan my book to someone who needs that.

I can see an application for WordPress MU for some people who were asking ME for blogging help a few weeks ago.  I totally ignored the emails (how rude of me) but this is posted to the group for people who were reaching out for help on getting their brokerages blogging.  That might work for them... Barness and Noble 30% off ... They  can probably get it even cheaper online....

Perhaps I should buy this book as well.  I have a typepad blog and  have gotten used to its' features and getting around.  I have tried Wordpress.com and know about Wordpress.org.  Wish I understood the differences and the advantages of over the other, alas.

Thanks Maureen.  It's on my list.  I've come kicking and screaming to "outside" blogging, but it's turning out to be easier (time consuming) than I thought.

Miriam... I am about a month away from changeing my blog to a TypePad blog if I don't get it.... or hiring someone to do the plug-ins and theme for me.

Hmm...so should I buy it?  I usually just ask Jay but it would be nice to learn it on my own.  Buy it or should I save the money?

Well, just plain vanilla here but so far very pleased with results from the public (customers) and my pagerank (5). It's not fancy but it seems to be working so I'm not going to change anything yet.

The .com version changed a couple months ago and they made some improvements to ease adding photos and to provide additional info in a different format. The main downside I see to the .com version is the inability to use javascript which means no polls, no special widgets and adding videos must be via YouTube. I just try to make the most of what I've got to work with.

I didn't know there was a word press group.  I have both a chocolate and a vanilla blog that I don't pay enough attention to.  What flavor is Active Rain?

Hmmmm I just ramped up a Wordpress blog and can't remember if its an Org or a Com or a emu (or an emu? hm).

Anyway, looking forward to more insight.

05/30/2008 10:25 PM by Gina Kay Landis (Real Living Realty Services)

Gina Kay if you signed up for a blog it is probably WordPress.com (hosted by WordPress) if you do a WordPress.org blog you have to find a host for your blog (not a big deal) but it has a few more steps than signing up on WordPress.com

I think wordpress is a great blogging platform. I think the one mistake most people make when they start their first blog is to use a site like blogger or wordpress.com instead of their own businesses domain. The SEO rewards are bountiful when you add all of that fantastic content to your blog and is attached to your business domain.

thanks for the comment... even if it is a bit spammy... linking to a group where there are three members and one post and where you are setting up virtual shop. I'd watch that tendency if I were you...

back to the topic at hand...   WordPress.org  I was blogging for a relatively long time before I knew of WordPress... and when I asked about WordPress in a some what stupid way I was told (or felt I was told) "shut up and keep blogging" by one of the owners of the company where my first blog is...

I need this book because I think wordpress has a lot of capabilities that I don't know how to use.

06/18/2008 09:32 AM by Franklin real estate Elizabeth Payne (Keller Williams - Franklin market center)

I need to read more of it... I carry it around but dread reading it.

I read the part about installing it... Installing went so easy that I did not learn much from it and my lazy brain did not want to understand the part about installing...  I gotta learn how to do this...or get a TypePad blog...

thanks for the comment

Maureen I really need this book I got a new wordpress.org and I am doing OK with it but there is so much more  it can do and I do bang my head up against the wall sometimes.  Thanks for letting us know about it.

I am writing a complete tutorial series, with screen shots, on setting up a real estate community blog on WordPress.  The tutorials are at About.com, but the easiest way to jump in is to go to the sample blog I'm building as part of the tutorials.  The blog is at http://DemoTownRealEstate.com.  The links on the right go to the various tutorial sections.

It will be very thorough as to the use of plugins to do what we need for our site visitors.  It also suggests the appropriate plugin for SEO purposes.  It's a work in progress, so you may be past some or all of it already.

Maureen:

I am in the process of activating a brand new plugin for listings, Great Real Estate, and it looks like it will be a great solution for displaying our own listings, including Google map, panoramas, image gallery, videos and listing details.  A bit complex, as it requires several other plugins to function.  I am working with the author on a map issue, then I'll get it up and running and add it to the tutorial.  For those in a hurry, use the link.

I was looking through it for a solution to my latest dilemma... I think I have to ask Jay McGillicuddy and Mark Flanders for help...

It's something I've done before.  It is embarassing. I need to throw in the towel and scream "Uncle."

"hopefully by now you've checked out wordpress.org"  I've had a WordPress.org blog for 20 months now  so yes I have checked  it out... I am not real comfortable finding info via the WordPress.org site or community.

Is there more than one WordPress group on AR?  I founded the group:: WordPress Blog

I believe your post is posted to the AR group,  WordPress Blog   and featured*.  I'm the one who features* the posts in that group.

* don't let the word featured confuse you.  It's just a little pat on the back... no extra points.
