Less Socialistic then AARP?

When I first became eligible for AARP I was excited about receiving some of the discounts I had heard of. I guess I did not put two and two together, and now I'm a little embarrassed. It only makes sense that if you (I) am looking for discounts (handouts) from a company that specializes in them then the company attitude is going to be a Socialistic attitude in whole. I'm embarrassed because I don't think of myself as a "gimme, gimme, I deserve it for existing" type of guy. After receiving just one newsletter it was painfully obvious that the whole attitude of AARP is an attitude of entitlement. This goes against every moral fiber in my body so I ask: Is there an organization for those of us over 50 that is not a Socialist organization?

The US government. So for all the money you have ploughed into social scurity they are going to take take take instead of give. Some how this does not make me happy but what the heck at least I am not a socialist. I am funning with you. Nice post

I am a member of AARP and I enjoy getting the magazine and newsletter every month. I also like the discounts especially at the Reebok store at the mall...40% off...it is great...maybe you need a attitude change..

Bob I am with you. I do not like socialism or a me me me attitude. I was raised to providie for my family by myself, not with any handouts. My wife and I have decided against AARP (we are not there yet, but close). Take care Bob

In response to Michael, I would be very happy with AARP if they just stuck to the coupons and discounts like your favorite with Reebok. My problem is with their Activist Socialism that some how turning 50 "Entitles" you to something. I'm sorry but a comotose monkey can hit 50, so is it owed something for this miraculous feat? I just don't think living to a certain age entitles anyone to anything. I have a six year old son and an eight year old daughter, we have been teaching them of the traps of socialism and the rewards of independance. It is my hopes that they will be able to save for their retirement years and not have all their earnings confiscated by the government so You and I are more comfortable in our retirement years.

Everything I've read in the AARP publications and knowing that AARP lobbiests campain for any/all socialist issues make me say "keep your coupons" and I can keep my MORALS.

I have a handle on your market!!!

Bob, what a great post.  I am over 50 and when I did turn to be 50 my mother-in-law signed me up for it as she is one of those people who expect me to go get her newspaper for her every morning and is voting for Clinton.  You ought to see some of the mail she gets.  It would burn the hair off the back of your head (maybe not from the look of your picture).  Great post and dead on.  The monthly letter gets delivered to her twice, one of mine and one of hers.

It;s a wheat & chaff thing, Bob. I disagree with much of their politics, but, they do some good work also. They work with places like Home Depot to encourage hiring of those over 50. They do look for discrimination in things like insurance, etc, based upon age. They also provide some good information.

Take care old man!

God made only a few good heads, the rest He covered with hair!

Thanks Mike, I do believe we are on the same page. I don't know if they (AARP) could stay out of the business of socialistic politics and focus on other ways to help us over 50 but that is what I'd like to see.

Yeah, Bob - it's a mixed bag, along with their socialistic agenda they encourage and provide means of continuing independance. Kind of Jekyl & Hyde.

Mike you are correct that they do some good. I woory about my kids having to support all those who did not bother to get ready for old age.

Kevin - I worry about that, as well as being able to support myself with the all the "unforseen consequences" of these regulations congress is passing. It appears that they are going to tax the heck out of us more and cause prices to go up even further.

They need adult supervision.

Jerry, I asked them to stop sending me materials immeadiately and I did not re-new. Now approximately 2 years later I'm still getting literature weekly which inturn goes straight to the garbage unopened.

Bob, I am so proud of you I could pop!  I fear for our country the further we get from capitalism.   But then, guess what will be will be.  In the mean time,I will just do what my conscience dictates, but for now, I have resisted all efforts by AARP to recruit me into their little circle of socialists.  Jerry
