Tips to Save Money on Gas

gas nozzleThese days I feel like I'm bleeding money at the gas pumps.  As a REALTOR focusing on country property and driving many miles every day, I have become very focused on any way that I can keep my gas costs down.  Below are some ways to maximize your gasoline purchase.

1. Always fill up when your gas tank gets to half, don't be in the habit of waiting until it gets down to a quarter or like me when you are driving on fumes.  Gasoline evaporates very easily and quickly.  The more air that you have in your tank the more quickly your gasoline will evaporate.  This may explain why it seems like the gas guage goes down faster when it registers below half; it really is dropping quicker.

2. Always fill up in the morning when the ground temperature is at its lowest.  Gas expands in warmer temperatures.  The tanks are buried; therefore the colder the ground the denser the gasoline.  As a result when the ground temperature is warmer the gallon of gas you are putting in your car may actually be less than a gallon.

3. When you are filling up always pump at slow speed.  Remember that gas vaporizes easily and when you are pumping slowly you are keeping the vapors to a minimum.  The hoses at the gas pumps are equipped with a vapor return and the vapors that are created when pumping go back into the storage tank with the result that you are actually getting less gas.

4. When you pull in to the station to buy gas, if you see a tanker filling up the tanks do not buy gas at that time.  Sediment that usually settles at the bottom is being stirred up and could get into your tank.

These tips came to me with the instructions to share with everyone you know.  For more information on this issue and energy saving see the April issue of Keswick Life Magazine.

Good tips.  Though to me it always seems that gas goes fastest the first half rather than the last half....?

Good tips, except...the temp of the gas in the ground isn't going to change much at all if any.  That is why Geo Thermal heating is getting so popular.  The ground temp from about 4 feet down and lower stays the same temp. all the time.  The gas tanks are as much as 12 feet at the bottom, and so to warm up that kind of volume that deep isn't going to happen.

You will save more gas by slowing down, starting slower and coasting to a stop sign when possible.  Not taking unnessesary trips save the most gas and money.

You're welcome Fernando.

Thomas - I had'nt thought about it either.  Maybe that's what happens somethimes when I fill up and then the car runs rough for a couple of days.  Used to happen with my suburban when I used to fill up at the country gas stations.

Ryan - My suburban used to drop like a stone after the first half of the tank.  It had a 40 gallon tank; lots of air as it got low.

William - You are right.  The best way to lower gas consumption is to drive less.  What you say about temperature makes sense to me.  But the information that I got said that 1 degree of temperature in the gasoline business is a big deal.
I guess it doesn't hurt to try to fill up in the morning in case it does make a difference.

Interesting info.  I had only heard of #4 before.  These days, every drop counts so I really appreciate the info.

Trish - I especially need to remember to fill up on slow speed.  I'm always in a hurry and want to get the car filled up quickly.

I have been filing up when half full for a while now. Not to save gas but because the pric eis going up so fast I figure the enxt day it will be 3 cents more.

I have started to lift my foot from the gas pedal going down hills now and also coasting as long as I can coming into stop lights and signs.  Every little bit seems to help.

James - You have a good point about filling up before the prices rise again.  Somedays I feel like they are going up hourly.
