MS Realtor Discovers Rare Grace Kelly Postcard

By

Every day brings new experiences, and in real estate, you never know what will unfold.

I was helping clean out a house that I recently sold. The out of state seller had held an estate sale, followed by a garage sale, and anything left over was to be either donated or thrown away. Closing was scheduled for the next day, and the listing agent and I had been sweeping, sorting, and tossing unwanted items for hours when she came across an old postcard.

Grace Kelly Postcard

She casually showed me the postcard and I exclaimed "It's Princess Grace!". The listing agent looked at me as if to say, "Okay, who's that?".

Upon closer examination and a quick Google search, I realized it was the wedding postcard of actress Grace Kelly to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Thinking it was just a commemorative postcard celebrating the marriage, I flipped the postcard over. Imagine my surprise when I realized the seller had likely attended the wedding, and this was the postcard she mailed to loved ones in the States! The wedding was April 18th, 1956 and the postmark is April 15th or 16th, 1956.

Back of postcard from 1956

The penmanship is elegant, but difficult to read. I believe it reads as follows:

"I'm down in Monte Carlo again to see the wedding. Everything here is wonderful."

It was mailed "Par Avion" (Air Mail) to California U.S.A., but I can't quite make out the city. If you can interpret the handwriting, I'd love to know the entire text.

It's fascinating to discover a treasure like this. Can you just imagine to excitement for this young woman to attend the Royal Wedding in Monaco?

And, regarding my headline, "MS Realtor Discovers Rare Grace Kelly Postcard", to me this qualifies as a rare find, although not particularly valuable. It is a piece of history that I find intriguing.

Coincidentally, the wedding took place the year I was born, so while I don't remember the wedding, of course I was familiar with the story of Princess Grace of Monoco.

It can sometimes be absolutely amazing, what is found at estate sales, or in instances like you mention, Pat.  That was quite the find!

What a great story, Pat, and a cool card. I think Sheri Sperry - MCNE® is right - Oceanside is the next town over from me along the coast, to the north!

Thank you for featuring me, Myrl Jeffcoat. I'm certain if I had not been present, this postcard would have been thrown away. I'm so glad I rescued it!

I think you're right Sheri Sperry - MCNE®. At first glance, the "O" looked like a "C" so I couldn't make out Oceanside. Thanks for tagging Jeff Dowler, CRS too. Jeff, I'm excited to learn another piece of the puzzle. I wasn't sure what part of California the seller resided.

Lauren Williams, CPO - your comment had me rolling. I'm a bit of a "collector" myself. If anyone is getting rid of something, I'll drag it home. I have to stay away from Flea Markets because I'd buy EVERYTHING! I don't know how you can be a Professional Organizer and have a love for all antiquated things. Don't you run out of room??

Oh, and Lauren Williams, CPO - the other items I brought home that day were beautifully bound hard cover books, including some of the classics. They were just too pretty to throw out, so now they "grace" my bookshelves and make me look well-read. :)

Pat Shephard starnes-front gate realty I'm very very lucky. I can stop myself at window-shopping. If I get something, it's usually something I've had on a list for weeks if not months.

OH MY! What a wonderful find, Pat! I would have held onto it too - I'm so glad you did! Great story and I wasn't quite born yet but, I do remember the Grace Kelly story as I was also born in the late 50's and her legacy lived for many decades (at least in my mind)!

Thanks everyone. Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI your comment was cut off, but yes, I was thrilled with this find. Someone came in my office the other day (at home) and was curious about the framed black and white photo. It's a great conversation piece. I was able to tell them the story of how the postcard was found and that is was actually mailed from the wedding. Very cool!
