Soldiers Pass

Enjoying Peace and Quiet of a Nature Hike

In Soldiers Pass, Sedona AZ

The Mittens, Ship Rock

The Soldiers Pass area can be accessed right from my front door.  It is a three to four minute walk to two different parts of the trail. You would never know that you are located close to the center of town from this area. Trails meander up and down arroyos as well as two of the most well known features. The Seven Sacred Pools and Devil's Kitchen are a popular tourist attraction, but even with a number of people visiting these features, you feel like you are the only person around.

How Do Sink Holes Form?

The big shelf that has fallen is named "Piano Rock".  This sink hole came about at the turn of the 20th century.  There are seven sinkholes in and around Sedona. These sinkholes form from the collapse of water filled caves located in the sandstone. The surface shelf above starts to weaken and then collapse under the weight of the rock.

Red Plume of Smoke

Legend has it that the settlers in an around Sedona saw a huge plume of red "smoke" rise up thousands of feet into the sky. It lasted long enough for many of them to find the source. It was named Devil's Kitchen because of that plume of red dust. Now it is a popular stop for hikers or Rock Climbing Jeeps with tour guides who spin this tale for the amusement of their passengers.

Hiking in Sedona

I am very grateful to be able to walk out my front door and start hiking. It is one of the best ways to clear your head and bring on renewed energy. Ideas and innovation comes much easier when your able to clear your mind walking through nature.

I agree, the ultimate luxury is to walk out one's door and be immersed in Nature. You are lucky to have such a gorgeous hike to access at any time. Wow.

( Also, curious about the question from Barbara. Maybe it would make a great post?)

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - That is an idea that I will "perk".  In our area, there are 3 neighborhoods that use a community septic system.  I will have to take pictures and make a post!  Thanks for the idea.

When it comes to beauty I alsways think of oceans, mountains, and desert. Oklahoma City has none of these but business is great. However, with your beauty I would enjoy it that much more.

You truly have a marvelous area to enjoy nature, and I would guess the temperature is warmer than most of the states. Is that true of Sedona? We've been experiencing the low 40s to mid 50s this week as a high and that's simply too chilly for me.

Hi Pat Starnes-Front Gate Realty - Our weather so far in November - 5 days in the 70's, 4 days above 66º, and 2 days below 66º.  Very pleasant weather. If the sun is out which is most of the time - the sun warms you up. We are about 10-15º cooler than Phoenix all year long.

Hi Sheri- what a perk to be able to walk outside your door and walk with nature!!! And Barbara Todaro Houston has a lot of clay soil (plasticity index)  which is why it floods so readily and why we have so many bayous, thus the bayou city. (and why we have no basements)

Hi Kathy Streib - I only wish I could get out there more.

Morning Sheri.

I see you have answered the question put forth by a lot of people, so I won't ask it again.

Nov 12, 2018 02:17 AM
Sheri Sperry - MCNE®

Hi James Dray - No problem - I could see why people think it is clay. Actually, this is the first time I have received that question.

Two reasons the soil is red...

1) Unique layer of rock known as Schnebly Hill Formation. - Orange to red colored sandstone.

2) Thin layer of iron-ore dust mixed in.  It is rare, but it can affect a magnetic reading for directional purposes.
