I remember less than a year ago sitting down with my fabulous broker and having a chat about Naples real estate.  I recall distinctively him telling me that the future of real estate marketing was in blogging and as he continued I sat quietly...completely skeptical.  I remember asking...really?  Why?  Who cares about what we have to say?  That sounds so stupid, how could it possibly help build business?

Then about a week later I went to the Inman conference in San Francisco and I miraculously transformed from a non-blog-believer to a true Active Rain Juice Fan.  When I got back to town, I walked into my broker's office and admitted that I GOT IT...and then went back to my office, joined Active Rain and wrote my first miserable post.

Now although I think it's important to high five Active Rain and talk about all the business and success that I've realized in my short nine months in the Rain, I think there are already a trillion posts like that so high-five Active Rain but let's talk about what's going on now.

Many of my fellow Active Rain buddies have spent quite a bit of time talking up blogging and the successes tied to it.  There's seminars and classes etc...the chatter is really endless if you've been paying attention but here's what's most interesting to me.

Initially, just as any new marketing concept that arrives in an industry most of what we heard was..."what's that".  There's a great deal of skepticism, just like my conversation with my broker mentioned at the top of the post.

Then the newness wore off and now I think it's safe to assume most intelligent people know what blogging is, but they still aren't doing it. I learned that fellow agents who weren't blogging weren't blogging because of a list of reasons:

  • I'm too busy
  • I don't know if it works
  • I don't want to sound stupid
  • I don't know how
  • I have it on my list of things to do
  • I like doing mail outs
  • I prefer to work with referrals

...blah blah blah.

But now we have entered into a new blogging era...kind of a parting of the seas if you will.  It seems that some people (who don't blog) have determined that blogging is in fact stupid.  Just the other day a colleague told me that someone else thought my blogging was BS. I must say, I was a little offended at the statement but after thinking about it a little further I felt a huge sigh of relief.

See, if everyone was blogging then well, there would be a lot more competition.  Right?  Which makes blogging a lot more effective for the fraction of people who choose to do it.

A day or so later I read an email from someone who prides themselves on being super intelligent who basically belittled blogging activity and the people who do it.  Again, cool, no big deal.

Fortunately for me, I've seen enough success with it that I will continue to blog.  I will continue to see success from it as I also believe those two people will not.  See, it's a win-win for all of us.  We remain successful with blogging, they do not....does it get any better than that?

I'd rather write a post about something I am interested in selling than write the same information in an email to one person or my tiny sphere of influence even if it is 1.000's of people because it completely fails in comparison to say...the whole world who types in my selected key terms because they want to know more about the subject in my post.

For those of you out there who are new and are just getting your feet wet, don't let the non-blog bullies out there tell you that blogging is "BS" or that you are stupid for trying it.  Get out there and share your smarts with the world and blog about what you want to be involved in.  The results will come even if someone else doesn't believe it.  Besides, your posts are meant to attract their future clients, not them!

Best Regards,

Your Naples Smart Girl!

Hi Shannon,

People pick things they like to do to market. Some people like postcards, some like network groups, some like open houses, some like knocking on doors and some like blogging.

Different strokes for different folks.

You & I know there is something about blogging, and AR is a special place to do it!

All the best!

Oh, I so agree with you. There are a few people that I know that belittle my activity. They call it silly or a waste of time. I say, whatever. People used to say the same things about websites...and look how that evolved.

It is like everything else - most people will say that it is dumb because they don't understand it, a few more will try it a couple of times and then say that it didn't work, and a few will shine!

Hi Shannon- Funny that we used to want everyone to join us....now we do our thing, help those that want it, and reap the benefits of our efforts.  I think one of the most important things to remember is that we are judged every day by what we write....good or bad, true or not. So make the best of it, and use it as any other median to let people know what we are really about.

Shannon, I just can't figure out how you got both the looks and the smarts. It aint fair. Well put post and I agree with what you say.

In my time one of the things that I have assessed for the non-bloggers is they are scared of it. They are scared that they will find out it works and wonder why they never did it.

You bring up a great point.  How many people have big ideas and when they share them...other people laugh.  That is crab mentality.  Its natural for others to pull others down....people dont like being lonely unsuccessful.   Its always good to praise people and their ideas and their efforts...blogging or otherwise!

For some, blogging is BS, because all they can blog about is BS.  For those who truly have something to say, blogging is a great avenue to attract business.  Blogging does a few things for me.  My outside blog focuses on the community more than real estate.  I've always struggled with the approach of saying to everyone I meet "By the way, I'm a Realtor and if you or anyone you know is interested in buying or selling, please call."  Just not my style.  Blogging about the community gives me a great in however.  It's really easy to go to a new business (or any business) and say, "I have a community blog, can I feature your business?"

Nobody says no to that, and once they check out what you wrote they follow the blog and soon enough they know you're a Realtor.  I've only been blogging since October and have closed 3 out of state deals from folks finding me on my community blog.  Works for me, I understand it won't work for others.

Well I quite agree with you SISTER!!  I myself signed on a year or so ago and really did nothing because , quite frankly I DID make excuses about "not having enought time" BUT more importantly then that? The FEAR of GOD was instilled into us by owners/managing brokers because "you better be careful about what you talk about" "you can get in trouble if  you say the wrong things" "we can't control what Realtors are saying, etc etc"

AND THEN I WOKE UP!!  LOL oh my gosh; well of course there will always be someone who inserts their tootie into their mouth; but...THEY ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT ME?  I would like to think I remain as professional here as I do in every other facet of my business, and once I got "GOOD WITH MYSELF" on that subject? and decided not to let them scare me out of one of the fastest growing aspects of our business BLOGGING?  I am rockin and rollin and having fun, meeting people, growing friendships, and my business

THANKS FOR THE POST, You go!!!

Hi Shannon, I read your post with great interest.  I get it now myself, but it took a little while.  I have encouraged and even begged some of my friends to try this, and they won't for reasons that you already listed.  Now, I am on my way with blogging, no matter what. I think some people have the obstacle of fear, such as what takes place with public speaking.  There will always be a critic, but it doesn't matter.  Your post was very reassuring, thanks for sharing.

Before I finished reading your post I thought......so what if there are people out there that don't blog.....then there is that must less competition.  And then i continued reading and you said the same exact thing.  Let's not try to convince anyone else to blog....it's a WIN WIN for us who do.  Three cheers to blogging.

SHANNON - People mock what they don't understand.  In real estate, so many people have convinced themselves that they know what is best, so they close themselves off to new ideas.  Most people that are on AR are interested in learning new things, and continue to improve themselves.  I know that I can't possibly possess as much information individually as the members of AR do as a group.  Why not embrace blogging and learn from it?  You mentioned the reasons, and I think that it will be a very long time before blogging is the norm for REALTORS.

Shannon, I love this post.  There are truly two camps; those that blog successfully and will continue to do so and those that say things to me like "it looks like those people have too much time on their hands".  Yet, that agent takes phone duty and sits for 3 hours.  I'm with you, let them stay out of blogging and keep it at 4% of Realtors!

I'm glad you addressed this topic. I'm doing a lot of thinking and reassessment of my business model and intend to incorporate more blogging. I'm definitely the only person in my company doing it and I barely mention it anymore because the attitude I meet with is that I'm just playing around and not doing anything serious to garner business with blogging. I completely disagree.

I'm firmly in your camp. Better for me if they don't know the secret.

Some of this disdain may be the result of FEAR.  People who were the brass b@$$s types who AGRESSIVELY knocked on doors and would call and badger for listings and sales have found the playing field leveled to include more intellectual - less "salsey" types and they don't like it one little bit.  Soooo they make fun of it.  We offer more value to the consumer than your typical "pushy salesman" types.  And generally that mindset does not do well in activities where writing skills and deep content  rule.   My guess is that the days of the pushy salesman are numbered - people are sick of it.

Hi Shannon - I'm with you about thinking it's okay for all those other people to think blogging is stupid and a waste of time, etc.  It used to bother me when I'd hear that, but now, now I secretly say a 'hooray' each time someone says that, and then I just go on my merry way and write a new post for all those who read my blogs.

I KNOW it works - the incoming leads tell me so, and clients I work with quote some of them back to me because the enjoy what they read.  I'm sold!

I have invited a number of folks to AR....most do a few lines for their profile and never to be heard of again...they may choose to use AR like a library...take out their password and research whatever but blogging for most plain and simple is just toooo much work. It's like anything else in this business or life in general...you get out of it what you put into it...you learn to refine it...you know what gets traffic to your site and what makes friends....there are lots of lazy realtors...and they will never know what they missed !
