Safety Tips for a Safe Holiday Season

Today is Black Friday and will bring all kinds of shoppers out. In order to help insure you and your family have a safe and wonderful Holiday Season remember most crimes are of opportunity. Those “Bad guys” are looking for an easy target so be on guard. Trust your instincts if your “gut” tells you something is not right. If you feel afraid, call 911.

Here are some home, car and shopping safety tips:

Home Safety

  • Inexpensive deterrents that are effective is to use timers to randomly set off lights around your home and play a radio talk show station giving the illusion someone is home, remember home alone?
  • Do not hide house keys near the entrance to your home. Traditional hiding places are always searched first (under the mat, flower pot etc.).
  • Thieves like to window shop..keep your blinds and curtains closed.
  • Make sure your mail and newspapers are picked up by a neighbor or friend if you are gone for the holidays.

Car Safety

  • Remember to lock your car!
  • Watch your surroundings as you approach your vehicle and stay alert
  • When approaching your car have your keys in your hand and enter quickly and lock your doors.
  • Drive off if someone approaches your vehicle.
  • Keep walking if you someone loitering near your car. Walk back to the store and if person doesn’t leave, notify security.
  • Put your purchases in the trunk of your car keeping them out of sight. Look around to see if anyone is watching you place items in your trunk if leaving your vehicle.

Shopping Tips

  • Don’t carry a large purse. Carry a small purse or fanny pack.
  • Only take the credit cards you want to use with you.
  • Don’t carry lots of cash.
  • Go with a shopping buddy
  • Shop during the day and avoid peak periods.
  • Don’t do all your shopping at once. A car full of gifts increases the odds of your car being broken into.
  • Don’t give thieves a reason to break into your car by leaving packages visible.
  • Remember remove the opportunity for thieves and you’ll greatly reduce the chances of being victimized!

Thank you for the tips. You are right; removing the opportunity for thieves should reduce the chances of being victimized. I would also recommend to install a security camera.
