Vasco Abadjiev was born in Sofia, Bulgaria back in 1926. To say he was brilliant would be an understatement. He graduated from a secondary school at nine. In 1936, his parents moved to Brussels, Belgium. At thirteen he graduated from the Brussels conservatoire with the highest distinction.

Right after graduation in 1939, he travelled to Germany, France, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. His father died in 1947 which was a difficult time for him. In 1952, he moved in with his mother in Bulgaria. In 1956, both of them resettled in Germany, never to leave again. His mother died in 1965. After her death, his live spiraled downward. He was plagued by numerous illnesses, financial problems and suffered from loneliness. In 1978, he was found dead on the city railway in Hamburg. How or what he died from I could not say as my research turned up nothing.

What you may not know about Vasco is that he was a child prodigy, having mastered the violin, he was playing by the age of six. Winning many competitions at thirteen he received a gold medal from King Leopold III. His travels mentioned earlier, well he was playing concerts in those countries. He also composed chamber music.

Until tomorrow give someone the free gift of a smile

Good morning James,

Sounds like he could play well and the ending seems to be that of so many musicians.

Make yourself an astonishing day.

It sounds like he suffered from chronic depression and it is sad that he didn't live in the modern age of diagnosis.

A very interesting character.  Reminds me of Mozart, a child prodigy who died too young as well.  Thanks, Mr. Dray!

James, this was a great, though very sad, story of Vasco Abadjiev, a genius virtuoso violinist.  Here was the greatness of a child prodigy, also taught by his father, a violin professor.  His father's death when Vasco was just 21 probably was a major factor in the direction his son's life took following his father's death.  I listened to the Vasco Abadjiev YouTube video,  P. Sarasate Tarantella.  It was magnificent!   Thank you, James Dray.

Hi James

His life really was a mixed blessing, between being a prodigy and the way his life progressed.
