Conceived and lovingly started by Gaudi (yes, the artist, not the adjective) in 1882, La Sagrada Familia is Barcelona's ringleader in the fantastic architectural circus created in the Catalan capital by its famous sons: Gaudi, Picasso and Miro.

My first time in Barcelona several years ago was one of those "I must pinch myself" occasions.  I could not believe the rich and playful architecture there.   My first thought was:  "they let kids play with bricks and mortar here", but then I got it: the Catalan mind is playful and appreciative of color, unique shapes and textures and given to extensive bouts of fantasizing.  The Catalan imagination is in full force here and evident in many of this beautiful city's structures, from the Parc Guell to Casa Mila, and back again to La Sagrada Familia

Although started in 1882, La Sagrada Familia is still in the building process (and you thought your builder was S  L   O    W  ...)   Yup, those Spaniards take their sweet time...  You and I will not witness the completion of this great structure in our lifetimes.  We are looking at an estimated 80 more years of work to complete it.  I know what you are thinking:  the next time one of your builders is behind schedule, you'll snap:  "Don't you try to pull a Sagrada Familia with me!"

I took these pictures last July when I was there last.  Enjoy!

Mirela,

Absolutely stunning !!!  What beauty, particularly coming up the stairs. Thanks for a wonderful post.

I love the cities and buildings of old. Wonder if they needed permits in those days?

Heather:  Thank you!  I love YOUR pictures, Heather!  You are a great photographer.  Coming from you, this is a huge compliment!

Bob:  I spent some of my teenage years in Fresno, CA.  I went to Hoover High school.  My sister had a home on the lake by Woodward park.  I went back to visit last year.  That area has grown so much.  It is very attractive now.

Leolinda:  Thank you!  Always a pleasure to hear from you!  I don't know why, but I always want to spell your name: LeoLinda.  It's such a beautiful name!

Mirela, You took my breath away... and brought back memories to me.

About 4 years ago I was traveling through Europe and visited Barcelona. I am going to dig into my pictures and find the ones I did at Sagrada Familia... I found that "Late Gothic Architecture" style very heavy but a little to rich in symbolism and meanings... to the point of wired. Most interesting and unusual building in Barcelona.

You will also find Gaudi's old home in - Barcelona -Park Guell which is now open to the public as a small museum.

Arina:  Yes, I know.  If you click on the Parc Guell link on my blog, you'll be able to watch a quick video about it.

If you post a blog about your travels, please post it to our TravelingRainers Group also.

Barbara:  Thank you!  When you go, you absolutely must take the stairs going up (or at least take the elevator and then walk down the stairs).  The views of Barcelona are incredible from the heights of La Sagrada Familia, and those narrow, stone steps give you a sense of the past.  The beaches in Barcelona are wonderful too, so make sure you bring your bathing suit (or not...  topless OK, I think; or was that in Cannes?)

Thanks for sending me this link, Mirela. It brings back wonderful memories. I just remember that the cement looked like it had been dripped onto the building. I went all over Barcelona looking for examples of Guadi's workk and bought a book that I still have. What a romantic city but ike you, I would not have spent my whole vacation there when all of Europe was beckoning :)
