Here in Southern Utah we have a lot of farms and vacation homes that have water wells to supply the water for either the farm and the house or just the house.  We have had a rash of vandalizms that have been occurring in our area wherein people will drive to the well pump and cut the electrical wires going from the pump to the sending unit.  They will then tie the cut ends around a tow hitch and drive off pulling up the wiring for the pump and causing a lot of damage to the pump and well.

These people then will strip the insulation off the wire and sell the wire as scrap copper.  They have also been hitting all of the construction sites in the area and stealing the wire right out of the walls for the same purpose.  They then take the money from their wanton destruction and go out and buy drugs.  It has gone far enough, that I heard a story from just inside of Lincoln County, Nevada that they did the same type of thing to a railroad switch that they do to the wells, and disabled a train switching station.  The only good part of that story, was that I hear that Lincoln County is considering filing charges of terrorism under the Homeland Security Act.

I know that times are tough on a lot of people, but I just don't like where this is going, I shudder to think what they will come up with next!  Anyway, what I am trying to say is that if you have listings like this that are off the beaten track, it may pay to make sure that the seller and the buyer find a way to do a neighborhood watch or some other way to protect themselves.  As a Realtor you would really be a hero if you were to take the effort to check on these unoccupied listings that you may have, the sellers, I am sure would really appreciate it.

It is really sad to see how bad things are for some people that they might resort to this kind of activity.

All the best!

I have heard of copper wiring being stripped from new construction homes here in Idaho too.  It is amazing what people come up with.  I would never think that copper wiring could be that profitable.  As agents safety of the property we have listed is a concern, and we should be aware of possible threats.

There have been copper wire thefts here in Arizona as well. There were reports that a number of them were caught here. Thank goodness.

Tony and Darcy ~ I so agree. We are in such a remote area here in Southern Utah I not only check on my listings but other realtors as well when I am out driving around. I think it is part of what makes us a community.  I have one totally empty property in Paria that I drive out a check a couple of times a week. Sad what you are having happen up there.

Thanks everyone for your comments, it is sad that people resort to this kind of thing.  The good thing is that some of them are being caught.
