Wordless Wednesdays...My Smallest One

When I began collecting orchids it was over 15 years ago when a friend called to say “let’s go orchid hunting.”

A local grower was closing and everything was on sale.

At one point I had about 125 orchids.

My hobby grew and I began looking for orchids that weren’t found at your local big box stores. Now I try to find species orchids like this one.

habenaria medusa

This is Habenaria medusa which I bought at a Delray Orchid Society Show.

The grower told me one thing...once it dies, no water until the growing season or when you see a shoot coming up. I was patient and was rewarded.

I'm on the search for another small species orchid!!!

I love orchids and a friend of mine is a collector also. He always warned me that you kill orchids with kindness.

I have a real brown thumb and I kill plants.  I do have a several years old shamrock that lives in my kitchen window sill, And I do okay with planted outside flowers, but not so much on the indoor stuff.  My grandmother and my great grandmother were fantastic.  I appreciate and love beautiful flowers and I do wish I had that talent, but I just don't.  I really love this photo and I'd never seen anything like that species.

Beautiful...it looks like a gathering of dragonflies or humming birds.

Ooooo Kathy, I can see why you wanted to find this type of orchid. Now I lust for it, too. How utterly beautiful!!!

You know, I threw an old orchid last spring into my hibiscus tree in the garden, and I noticed yesterday that it is sending out all sorts of shoots and pretty soon it will bloom!!!! Just stuck it in the tree like my neighbor suggested. Amazing!

Wow, you must have a green thumb Kathy as orchids take some work! That is the most unusual orchid that I have ever seen. It looks similar to my clematis flowers after the petals have fallen off.

It's very unusual, but pretty, Kathy.  A few years ago, one of my daughter's friends gave me a small orchid as a birthday gift.  Oddly enough, that orchid blooms prolifically.  It's container holds no more than a half cup of soil.

Kathy,

I have not seen this orchid, and I can see why you love it.  Wishing you a delightful rest of the day.  Just got home from Florida a quick zip in/zip out trip.  A

Wayne Martin thank you!!! Thankfully orchids are easy to grow here.

Michael Jacobs honestly, I had no idea how many I had until we moved from Delray to Northern VA. I had to count them.

William Feela It would probably easier if I did collect stuffed animals.

Sharon Lee Most of them were in trees, a few in our atrium, and just a few inside.

Brian England This one has been inside along with about 5 others, and I'm down to about 25 orchids these days.

Nina Hollander I no longer have that many because I gave most of them away when we moved up north. Now I have maybe 25. When I lived in Leesburg, VA I had my orchids inside during the cooler months when meant hand watering and feeding each one (about 40)

Norma J. Elkins I swore off getting too many orchids because on the rare occasion when we get long nights below 45, I have to take them all inside.

Roy Kelley Thank you! I would love to see how you would have photographed it.

Dorie Dillard CRS GRI ABR the recent hurricanes cured me of owning too many orchids!  They all have to be brought inside so they won't become flying missiles!

Donald Urschalitz When we commuted between Delray and Orlando, a friend had me babysit his Cymbidium because it needed cooler night temps to bloom! Sure enough it did and we took the orchid back to him.

Kat Palmiotti when I was in Leesburg, VA it would take me over 2 hours each week to water my indoor orchids during the cold months.

Joan Cox try again! I'll bet that there are some orchids you can grow! Remember, less is more!

Grant Schneider Thank you. I love seeing a new bud or spike on an orchid.

Joe Pryor he's right. Just think about where the orchid is used to growing then recreate it.

Tammy Lankford, Get a Phalaenopsis for indoors. Their blooms last forever!

Sharon Tara Since the spike started peeking through the media, I've kept an eye on it!!! So excited.

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents listen to your neighbor!!! My orchids are hanging from a tree and I have a few that are growing on the trees and they do so much better!!! Larry's daughter brought home an orchid when she was visiting. she'd found it in a dumpster. I have it and it has bloomed each year for me.

Hi George Souto it looks nothing like an orchid, does it?!

Myrl Jeffcoat the vanda, which is one of my favorites, doesn't even need soil or growing media. I've seen them at the orchid shows just hanging from a wire.

Morning Kathy.

Never seen one of those before.  I know there are a lot of things I've never seen, and never will. Pity, life is so short
