The Wood Duck

Almost Sunrise in Carlisle brings many sounds each morning.  But today, something new.  The turkeys were communicating with each other to greet the day and leave their trees for the morning.  But there was a new voice.  Maybe a duck...maybe ducks.  Quite unlike any other ducks.

Some how the turkeys found their way into the fenced yard.  Some in some out.  All stayed and waited until the last one in, went out!  All is well...but hours had passed.

Off to work on this really beautiful, breezy, sunny day.  And home again after a productive day...but wait still a little to do, so down the stairs to the home office when...scuffle, squak, squeek...ran up the stairs, slam the door.  I went outside to peek in the windows.  Sure enough something big(ish) with feathers and flying.  Must be a small turkey.  HELP!  I am out of here.

Along comes my hero!  Armed with a blanket and a tennis racket (just in cast)...he opens the door...and sees a beautiful and terrified Wood Duck.  Small, delicate, so afraid.  Finally, he is carried to the yard and tossed in the air...he takes off like a...bird!  We found feathers in the fireplace and quickly closed the flu.

So we sat and listened to the sounds in the woods just beyond our deck.  Turkeys, ducks, frogs, birds...and swooping by, two barred owls in the late afternoon.  It just doesn't get any better than this.

Hope you had a good day, too!
