Do you have a home office?

I have to say that I love working at home when I can...especially when it's cold, rain or gasp snowy.  It makes life so much easier.  I don't have to get dressed up or drive/commute to work, and I have everything around me that I need.

I also have 2 furry friends who keep me company.  I can have the TV/radio in the background (it often helps me work better...but not always).  It's also easy to talk on the phone at home as I don't have to worry about the noise or others hearing what I'm saying.  Since I live in a city, it's also easy for me to walk to a coffee shop, if I need a change of scenery.  I guess it also helps save me money when it comes time for lunch.

Yesterday, I just wrote an article on my site about home office organizing and decor tips.  Feel free to check it out if you're looking for some tips.

But, it just occurred to me that so many of you must have home offices.  For some of you, it may be your main office; for others, it may be a satellite or part-time office.

So you are a perfect focus group.  You may be able to help me strengthen my article.

There are still a few things I need to add.  (I was tired last night, and just wanted to get the post out the door.  I knowlzazy right?).  I want to add a couple of pins about the best paint colors for home offices (the paint shades are in the article if you're interested, but I want to create 2 amazing pins, so that is part of today's work).

I also want to add a section on using a timer.  This can help you as you are pacing yourself with working/breaks.  And, importantly, it can regulate your time if you get distracted on FB (like I do) and then set a timer of 5 mins or 15 mins or whatever.

So tell me.

1.  What do you absolutely adore about you home office?  What's your most favorite thing?

2.  What do you wish you had for your home office?

3.  What would you like to improve.

Feel free to be as specific as possible.

Debbie Gartner I do love the opportunity to work from home but lately it has been a drag because I've let clutter take over. It's been a challenge as in the last year I've relocated my "real" office several times because I closed my own office that was set up for several agents (twice), I've moved offices from one model home to another (3 times), and now I'm closing my final Real Estate office (thus the clutter).

Now to your 3 questions..

1.  What do you absolutely adore about you home office?  What's your most favorite thing? My stereo & fireplace.

2.  What do you wish you had for your home office? #1) a window as it is in my basement. I put in a tremendous amount of lighting but it just doesn't compensate for no window. #2) a secretary

3.  What would you like to improve. #1) Natural lighting as mentioned earlier. #2) my attitude towards filing .

Awesome input, Bob. Thank you.  I'm going to incorporate some of these ideas into the article.

Your article on your site offers some really good ideas.  What I love about my home office and my work office is the lack of paper.  I try to be as paperless as possible so I love my scanner and my shredder. I also love that I have a door that I can close to my office.  I'd like to improve my desk options but can't seem to find one that is functional yet fits my decor - thanks for those suggestions in your article BTW.

Great input, Francine.  I need to add some of the items.  I don't know how I didn't think of them before.

I do use ony a home office for my business.   But I feel I do lose a bit because of visability.  but few agents want to sit in the office anymore

Hi Debbie, I find that the more comfortable you are at your home office, the less work you do! ha.

SO it is for me ALL about motivation to get things DONE.  I have an office but I don't need to be there all day long.
I think you save a heck of a lot of wasted time driving around all over the place, which is the best aspect of having a home office or studio.  It saves time and car expenses.

Also, it is nearby whenever you are inspired to DO THINGS!!

Great points.  I love avoiding the driving time and I can see how it can be challenging to motivate yourself at times.

I don't have an official home office set up, but I do work from home sometimes at a desk in an empty bedroom. I find being near a window sets a positive mood, along with music playing from my phone or radio.

When I first opened my office in 2005, and it was such a different time, I had a storefront in a prime location. I called it my Porsche because the overhead could have bought me one. I was already so electronic the way I worked that my clients never needed to come into my office. The agents that I hired worked out of home offices. Nobody did floor time. It wasn't part of the model. So the only people that did come into the office were tire kickers and solicitors. As soon as my lease was up, I moved into my home where I already had an office anyway. And there I have been for 10 years. I would never change that. I got audited this summer and passed with flying colors so obviously I'm efficient. I also have a recording studio. And I have another business that operates out of my home. I couldn't accomplish half of what I do if I had to be spread out location wise.

I am fairly new to the home office. The things I enjoy are the view from my home of the trees, birds as it is better than an inside office enclosure.

Also the ability to spend more concentrated time to learn new techniques without interuption (except for Huckleberry wanting out to bark at something).

My expenses of getting lunch have all but disappeared.

Home office organization seems to be my issue that I'm facing currently.

I utilize several satellite offices and also work from my home. My office at home is self contained, and I have all the tools and resources to be efficient and effective unless it's a F2F meeting. If so, we'll meet at a satellite office or a mutually designated place, prospect or client's home, office or restaurant. I'm transitioning to online meetings whenever possible to utilize my time and clients time more efficiently.

I spend so much of my time in my home office Debbie...great idea here!  I find I'm interested in aesthetically pleasing lighting, organization storage (that's attractive that I can keep on my desk and book shelf for easy access...ie folders, paper clips, paper), rug ideas (I know I need to get one but haven't taken the time).  Thanks for the article/s!!
