Run Safely in Kentlands
Kentlands is one of the favorite areas for Gaithersburg runners and walkers. The well lighted streets with sidewalks and pathways are hard to beat for those who are trying to get some exercise. The Kentlands Citizens Assembly has posted the following suggestions for the safety of runners in the community.
As Kentlands and Lakelands boast winding roads, hills and slopes, it is no wonder runners flock to the streets at wee hours of the morning for their early morning workout.
Reflective Gear
Before you leave the house- don't forget to glow! All runners, whether soloists or organized groups, should wear reflective gear and/or utilize a headlamp or flashlight to illuminate yourself while running, or walking.
Stop, Look & Listen
As children we are taught to stop, look and listen, but as adults we tend to desensitize ourselves to normative behavior. Always look twice, or maybe even three times. Extra awareness of your surroundings never hurts. If necessary, stop at the corner and jog in place while giving vehicles the right of way.
Never Assume
Do not assume a driver can see you. When turning corners, try your best to favor shoulders and sidewalks to ensure there is a clearance between you and a vehicle.
Blockades
Playing in the street was never advised. That includes stretching or group workouts that block roads or parking lots. Unless a permit has been issued for the group workout- do not create a blockade.
Pedestrians and drivers have a responsibility to each other. These are highly recommended preventative measures for pedestrians.
