Fixit Friday or Internet-less Days

Oh, how we get out of sorts when we don’t have our connection to Cyberville!

Wednesday while visiting my brother in Houston, we discovered that there was a large internet outage (the large carrier that is not Verizon).  My poor snap out of itbrother held for hours on the phone and tried to download the carrier’s app to see if the problem was n his end or theirs.

We considered going out for a new modem but it wouldn’t do any good if it was a larger problem.

Thankfully I have unlimited data so did my best with my iPad and iPhone.  But I had to resort to using my phone as a hotspot for my laptop to polish off my post.

What in the world did we do pre-internet???

To show you how locked into everything being on the internet, after dinner, we were sitting around talking with my brother and his wife, Cathy. Now, Cathy had been out all day and in all honesty, refuses to give up her flip-phone...not tech-focused.

Cathy said...Why isn’t the television on?

Those of us tech gurus...smarty pants that we are said.  Well, we have no internet or cable service...we would have to watch television on our phones or iPad.

Then the non-tech person said...You big techie people...we have Dish Network. We don’t need the internet for that!!!

Yes, we were put in our places!

Haha, you are too funny, I am glad she solved your TV problem.  If my provider has a big outage, I make them give me a credit on my bill, since I am paying for service that they are not delivering, haha.

Hi Kathy Streib - I am as "connected" as I want to be. I won't get Alexa or anything like it.  But, every once in awhile my husband thinks about connecting lights and appliances to the internet... At some point we may not have a better choice but for now, I do!

Good morning Kathy - it wasn't that long ago for us but what a difference with this wired world.  My cell signal is so weak at my house that it doesn't work when my Internet goes out.  Then I am off to Starbucks.

Imagine a day without internet.  I could handle it just fine. We live in a connected world but are communicating less.

All I know is that pre-internet I got a lot more done! I can't imagine life now without it but I sometimes wish otherwise . . .

Kathy,

We had a power outage on Christmas night.  It lasted an hour, and we took it as an opportunity to just relax and wait it out.  We did use our hotspots to continue watching the Laker game. LOL A

I try to keep most things off the necessity of being online. Because technology is fickle.

However, I do use several different carriers for that very reason. No way in hell would I use the same carrier for my iPad as my phone. It has come in very handy, especially when I need a hotspot.

Morning Kathy.

I can remember when my youngest wanted a thing he called a computer.  I got him one, as I took it to him I said.  "This is just a fad, that will go away soon."   Goes to show you what I know.

Unless there's a bill that needs to be paid, or some critical internet communication that needs to happen, that outtage really should have been an opportunity to change up the internet addiction.  I've realized that there is nothing so important that happens online that I can't step away from it for a while.  It only bothers me when I can't get my work done.

Kathy, I love technology for business, but I have days where I wish it wasn't such a big part of my daily routine. It is a huge asset at times and pain in the assets at times.
