It All Comes Out in the Wash......MOLD

By
Real Estate Agent with Liberty Homes RS-#62825

You ever hear about airing dirty laundry? Yup. That's what happens on the internet when one airs their dirty little secrets for all to see...forever and ever. You just never know when it'll pop up to bite you in the behind again. You just never know when it'll pop up to help someone.

I was so upset about the occupants upstairs NOT airing their dirty laundry about their flood, leak or whatever it was....that happened over a week ago.

I have been wondering why someone would wait until "something" happened before even acknowledging that "something" happened....until a week "after the fact". A week later....when it all came tumbling down.

I'm more upset now.  There's MOLD.

Now I'm more concerned with the mold that is now forming above our ceiling and who knows...in between our walls. We peeled away more of the drywall and lo and behold....MOLD.

It all comes out in the wash.

Important tips regarding water leaks and mold:

  • Often directly related to water damage
  • It only takes some type of water intrusion or water condensation to start the process
  • It only takes 24 hours for the process to begin
  • Even after the moisture has stopped the mold continues to grow
  • Indoor mold spores can be seen OR smelled.
  • Health risks if inhaled, ingested or contact to skin in pores, cuts etc.
  • Health problems include, allergic reactions, irritation of tissues, infections and toxic effects.
  • Ventilate your home consistently as it will dilute and flush out the mold particles.
  • Get a professional to help you with the extraction and clean up.

Believe me, you don't want to be responsible for causing the health problems of other neighbors or your family when you don't report or notify your condo neighbors of a flood or leak. You don't want to be responsible for further water damage to yours and anothers unit.

Being proactive and taking preventive measures are the only way to go. Air that dirty laundry to prevent futher damages.

Because it will always come out in the wash in the end anyway.....

Sally, EEEEWWWWWW. What a mess and a liability. cough, cough, wheeze, wheeze. I met a lady in real estate school many years ago that was getting her license because of mold. Uh-huh. She and her family had become ill, very ill and the insurance company wouldn't cover her claim so she lost her house. It's not something anyone wants to have to deal with. It's like a bill collector...it keeps coming back.

I love pulling up your green screen. I've been in the depths of mentoring...I miss reading my friends.

Later in the rain~Deb

Hey Deb: Yeah... watch me get something done. If I had known a week ago it would have been fixed already.

Sally mold can be a pain in the butt, hope it gets taken care of and that others in your complex learn a lesson from this.

Sally, I have learned more about mold this last year then I'd ever want to know :(  The health issues I had were awful including shots every single week.  It took finally an antifungal antibiotic to get me better (which despite my pleas they wouldn't try for a year).  Be safe and throw anything out that was pourous.

Sally- This is one of those "oh no here we go again" kind of stories.....an upstairs person, and water runing your place.....a yearly vacation is so much more pleasant than a yearly leak :)  Hang in there friend, it'll all be over soon enough.

Carole: Believe me Carole...because of your stories....I have learned to pay particular attention in my transactions as well as my own home. I'm so glad you're better now.

Kathy: Yeah....it will...sure dampens the home life though.

Randy: All I know is we took the initiative to try and eliminate sources....next to our upstairs neighbor could be yet another posibility. I'm so worn out that I am leaving it to the insurance investigators now.

Funny how no one wants to take responsibility.....and yet...we did. I admitted we were the victims LOL!

Sally, I just came home to a huge leak and fallen dining room ceiling!  And this is less than a year after having both bathrooms taken down to the studs!  I can't blame an upstairs neighbor!  GRRRR!

Hi Sally - Sorry that this happened to you.  Thank you for putting the issue out there to remind all apartment dwellers (and homeowners!) to check for leaks.

We had a ceiling fall down below our laundry room:  The gas installer hooked up the gas for the dryer (it was a stack unit), hooked up the washing machine hose without a "washer" (little black rubber ring) and pushed it back.  We were selling the home and grateful that the damage happened while we were there to fix it.

This was a minor issue but for the tenants above you to let the leak go to do that kind of damage, well, unconscionable.

Speaking of MOLD i showed a home in Byron Center Mich and the lower level was coated with it. Looking at it is bad enough. Inhaling is another problem. Timely post.

Even here in the desert mold can be a real problem.  People from out of the area think that's ridiculous but if you have a water leak that goes for just a short while unnoticed, with our extreme heats we can have a BIG problem in a very short period of time.
