During the month of January 2019, the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy is offering outdoor hikes/activities for Palos Verdes home owners to enjoy including bird walks, nature walks with naturalists, nocturnal full moon walk and volunteer opportunities which are listed below.

Special Events: 

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service at White Point Nature Preserve, will take place on Monday, January 21, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. You will join the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy for this special day of service!  Bring the family to help restore the demonstration garden, benefiting local wildlife and celebrating a day of plant diversity for a great day off from school!  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.  

Volunteer Trail Watch Training with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy will take place on Saturday, January 26, and February 2, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  If you like to hike, ride your bike or horse, and are interested in helping protect the Preserve and it’s habitat and wildlife, why not become a Trail Watch Volunteer and make a difference on the trails.  You must be 18 or older to participate.  Ladera Linda Community Center, 32201 Forrestal Drive, Rancho Palos Verdes.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Guided Nature Walk by Palos Verdes Land Conservancy will take place at Agua Amarga on Saturday, January 12, 2019, at 9:00 a.m.  Walk the trail while enjoying the views, and appreciate the results of many volunteers’ trail and habitat restoration efforts in this quiet neighborhood canyon on the Agua Amarga Reserve.  This is considered a moderate walk.  For parking, from Hawthorne turn west onto Verde Ridge Road, right on El Rodeo, left on King Harbor Rd.  Park on the street and meet at Rock Park Drive cul-de-sac.  For more information, please call (310) 541-7613 ext 201 or sign up at www.pvplc.org.

Monthly Activities:

The Family Nature Walk at George F Canyon will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Families will enjoy this easy and educational walk with a Naturalist through this beautiful canyon preserve and discover the unique variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and insects that call it home.  he walk concludes inside the Nature Center with a hands on exploration of the exhibits.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly.  Leashed dogs are welcome.  The preserve is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 547-0862 or RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities. 

The Family Science & Storytime at White Point Nature Education Center will take place on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Bring the family to experience a hands on science exploration of one of the Peninsula’s amazing wildlife species: the California King Snake.  Your family will enjoy stories, songs and activities with retired Children’s Librarian, Carla Sedlacek.  Stay and explore the Nature Center, take a walk on the trails or have a picnic under the historic trees.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages.  Stroller friendly. The Family Science & Storytime will take place at George F Canyon on Saturday, January 12, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Bring your family to experience a hands on science exploration and listen to our Naturalist share child friendly literature about the Peninsula’s endangered Cactus Wren. Stay and explore the wildlife exhibits, beautiful preserve trail, and picnic under the shady Learning Tree.  This event is free and appropriate for all ages. Think about new ways to landscape with native plants this year!  Native Plant Sale at the White Point Nature Preserve will take place on January 12, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  Help attract butterflies and other pollinators and beautify your home garden with plants grown in the Conservancy’s nursery.  Purchase colorful, drought tolerant native plants that make fertilizers and insecticides virtually unnecessary and require little or no water.  Naturalists are on hand to give advice.  Plants sold on first come, first served basis.  White Point Nature Preserve is located at 1600 W. Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at www.pvplc.org, Events & Activities.

The Wild Birds Unlimited Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on Wednesday, January 16, 2019, at 8:30 a.m.  Join Wild Birds Unlimited to explore the birds that make the White Point Nature Preserve home.  Try to spot a burrowing owl or listen for the call of the endangered gnat catcher.  Binoculars will be supplied for beginners.  The program is free and open to the public.  All ages are welcome.  White Point Nature Education Center is located at 1600 West Paseo del Mar in San Pedro.  RSVP at  www.pvplc.org,Events & Activities.

The Family Nature Walk at White Point Nature Preserve will take place on January 19, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  This Naturalist led walk includes a walk through the Tongva Native Plant Demonstration Garden where you will learn how early inhabitants of the Peninsula used these plants for a variety of purposes for thousands of years.  Then walk the trails through beautifully restored coastal sage scrub habitat with views of Catalina.  For those interested in the military history of the area, continue to walk up to a WWII gun emplacement.  The walk concludes with a visit to the Nature Education Center with multi-media activities for all ages.  This is a moderate walk and is free, stroller friendly and leashed dogs are welcome.  The White Point Education Center is located at 1600 W. Volunteer Opportunities:

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Alta Vicente Reserve will take place on Saturday, January 5th and 12th, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  Help restore this unique canyon habitat home to many threatened and endangered wildlife species.  Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteer.com.

The Family Outdoor Volunteer Activity at the George F. Canyon Nature Preserve will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 11:00 a.m.  Put on your work clothes and take part in a kid friendly habitat restoration activity: plant seeds, care for native plants, and track wildlife.  Children of all ages will be learning to understand the role that they can play in nature conservation.  This event is free.  George F Canyon is located at 27305 Palos Verdes Drive East, Rolling Hills Estates.  For more information call (310) 541-7613 or RSVP at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Outdoor Volunteer Days at Native Plant Nursery will also take place on Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  You will nurture seedlings to grow shrubs for habitat restoration projects.  You must RSVP by Wednesday, December 26, 2018. Sign up at www.pvplc.volunteerhub.com.

Adopt your own piece of nature!  Become an Adopt-a-Plot volunteer with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy.  Enjoy the outdoors and become inspired by nature as a volunteer.  You will help create habitat for rare and endangered species (like the PV blue butterfly) at one of the restoration sites on the Peninsula on your own schedule.  For more information, contact info@pvplc.org, or call (310) 541-7613 x 215.
