In another life I was a teacher and had a couple of very special students who were great mimes. After they graduated from school and found themselves back in my neck of the woods I put them together professionally and they toured and performed around the country. Many years later the woman in the group died way to soon of brain cancer, leaving a husband and two young kids behind. I miss her still.
The man in the group went onto find himself and embrace who he was. We have kept in touch but I haven't seen him since the woman died, and that was almost twenty years ago. We still speak occasionally and communicate online too.
About a month ago, he sent me an obituary for another teacher I worked with. Clearly he was impacted. A few weeks ago he wanted to confirm my mailing address because he was going to send me something. I was intrigued but frankly forgot about it until yesterday. I assumed it would be something from our mime years, but I was wrong.
I got to the post office to get my mail and there was the package waiting. It was from Harry and David and it had goodies. I was surprised and taken back but the best was yet to come. When I acknowledged the gift, my friend told me that when he heard about the other teachers death he began to think about those people who had influenced and made a difference in his life. I was among those folks and he wanted to say thank you.
Wow....out of nowhere and so very special. I was a teacher and he was my student but now we are friends who both think fondly about a time in our lives when words were unnecessary, but now mean so very much.
