Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon
Sunday January 20, 2019 in Carlsbad CA
New Year’s Eve is now a distant memory, 2019 is in full swing, and if you are a runner you may be finishing your training for the famous Carlsbad Marathon or Half Marathon.
I suspect there are some runners from others parts of the freezing cold US who are planning on this run too, and with good reason – it’s a BIG event here!
The Tri-City Medical Center Carlsbad Marathon takes place in less than 2 weeks, on Sunday January 20, in our beautiful village by the sea, Carlsbad California. And it’s the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend, too!
Another bonus for you serious runners? The Carlsbad marathon is a qualifying event for the famed Boston Marathon.
The Carlsbad Marathon and Half Marathon are hugely popular with both world class runners and new runners, along with plenty of appreciative viewers along the course. The Carlsbad marathon is a favorite due to the location (who DOESN’T appreciate Southern California weather in January?! Low 60s today!!), and the course; a large portion of the Carlsbad marathon and half marathon courses are along our beautiful Carlsbad coastline on historic Route 101/Coast Highway (Carlsbad Boulevard), with truly wonderful Pacific Ocean views and a gently rolling course with minimal elevation changes.
Although I am not a runner I would think one bonus to the Carlsbad marathon is being to run a world class marathon in January and not freeze body parts! And you also get to see the Buena Vista Lagoon and our charming Carlsbad Village while running!

The marathon and half marathon both start and finish at The Shoppes at Carlsbad (formerly the Westfield Mall) but follow different courses. Celebrate at the finish line with live music, refreshments and a Beer Garden (21 and older only).
In addition to the Full and Half Marathons, there is a Kids Marathon Mile for kids of all ages and abilities, taking place at world-famous Legoland in Carlsbad on Saturday January 19th.
Be aware there are some significant road closures during the marathon if you live here, or will be visiting. These start very early Sunday morning, and we are already seeing signs around town as a reminder of the road closures, including the Coast Road/Carlsbad Boulevard (all lanes) along the ocean from the Oceanside line to La Costa Avenue.
The Health and Lifestyle Expo is Friday January 12th from 12 noon until 5 pm at The Shoppes at Carlsbad off El Camino Real in Carlsbad (just south of the 78 freeway) where the marathon and half marathon start and end. The Expo continues on Saturday from 10 am until 5 pm.
If you haven’t done so already, you can register online here. But don’t wait as online registration usually closes before the event.
