Pondering on Uncertainty

The fastest way to break the cycle of perfectionism

and become a fearless mother is to give up

the idea of doing it perfectly -

indeed to embrace uncertainty and imperfection.

--Arianna Huffington

On Uncertainty.  I ponder.  It may be the ideal pondering activity.

Unlike Ms. Huffington, I am neither a mother, not even a parent nor an influencer but I can ponder.  I take her words and try to find meaning.

I'm okay with breaking the cycle of perfectionism although I have been known to relapse from time to time.  It happens.

Becoming fearless.  I'm not without fear.  Some fear is rational as I see it,  So some of it does exist I guess. I don't feel overwhelmed by it.

Now about uncertainty.  The word seems to have a rather negative vibe surrounding it.  Forget what's good and forget what's bad.  It is what it is.  Yeah, that works.  Is that it?  Well, kinda.   A simple search of uncertainty for a definition brings even more words.  Doubt and more.  A lot of words that deal with the prediction of events. Just more stuff.  Or is it?

Hmm...is pondering not another word for uncertainty but simply a cure for it?   Am I merely somewhat cleverly attempting to find yet another reason to ponder.  That's it.  I may have found it!  Any thoughts on uncertainty? Or do you think more pondering will help?

Hi Michael,
Life is just one big long exercise in navigating uncertainty, isn't it?  I mean every single decision or act carries an expectation yet there is always uncertainty.  Are expectations the opposite of uncertainty?  More to ponder.

Pondering can be or should be a definition for procrastination. Pondering is good, and it often allows you to view something from a different angle as you ponder and get a glimpse of what may be. Sometimes we need to turn things upside down and look at them completely differently as opposed to looking at them in a certain way. That would induce uncertainty.

Dear Michael,

Uncertainty is a given. Regarding Ms Huffington's remarks, she is on to something. If you do not have things go wrong, you are not doing enough.

I'm dealing with a lot of uncertainty in my personal life at the moment and it is very uncomfortable.  I am doing my best to control what I can and let the rest go, but it's hard when you are a Type A.

Hello Michael: I believe uncertainty pushes one out of a comfort zone and into unknown territory, which is very frightening for a lot of people. This is something I was thinking about today, how I have been pushing myself to do things that are uncomfortable for me, and how that kind of attitude is working very well. I am finding out the things I thought were uncomfortable are not. It helps me to grow and develop as a person.

So hell yes, bring uncertainty on and embrace it. It will make you stronger and wiser.

Can I relate, Michael? You bet I can... I am a recovering perfectionist! It's a lifelong challenge to be able to live with excellence instead of perfectionism. Uncertainty is not as big an issue for me, persoonally, as the quest for perfect, which deep down I know does not exist and if it does means different things to different people.

As a firm believer in the yin and yang of life's balancing act, I think we need uncertainty to understand certainty. Or is it to appreciate certainty? I don't know, but we don't have a crystal ball, so there is always a bit of mystery to most outcomes. As for perfection-oh that elusive butterfly! The only perfection I have ever witnessed is in nature.

Michael, I try not to ponder on uncertainty too much. It exists in daily life in different ways and if I ponder too long I feel fear. I'm a recovering perfectionist, my recovery doesn't always go so well. Ariana Huffington's quote is something new for me to ponder. Had not read it before and it speaks to me.
