One doesn't cover both!

Back to home safety.

Smoke detectors and CO2 detectors.

Very important and saves lives.

Now days you can buy units that detect both.

But there is a problem.

Where do you place it on the wall?

Smoke is from heat and rises.

CO2 is a heavier than air gas so it sinks.

So, if you place the detector near the ceiling, you don't get the CO2 reading

If you place it by the floor you don't get the smoke reading.

This is MY HUMBLE OPINION...You need to place detectors in both places in order to be as safe as possible.

Good information.  I always placed the smoke and carbons next to each other.  I never liked using combos because the inspectors (once a year requirement) never realize that they are combos.

Good information! I’ve never considered that the placement of the units may affect the readings.

This is always the question and when I have actually read the installation instructions, they don't even tell you where to place the units!

William great post you are spot on and in some places where the place is very small.   For example 1100 sq ft or less even if it is not near the fireplace or the kitchen it helps.  Provided they are like you said, in the right height level that is appropriate for the type of protection you need. Yep, smoke detectors and CO2 detectors are very different animals!  That's good advice about placement of them.

Good advice William. I don't think most people consider that when purchasing a dual detector. Buying one of each & putting them in the correct location is the way to go.
