Some interesting stats from the National Association of Realtors (NAR):

The median income for a Realtor in 2007 was $42,000.  That was down about 11% from 2006.

The median income for a Realtor with:

Two or less years of experience: $10,500.
Three to six years of experience: $34,600.
Six to 15 years experience: $52,000.
More than 16 years experience:  $69,500.

Membership grew 90% from 1998 to 2006, peaking at 1.36 million members.  There are currently 1.2 million members.

These numbers make me feel better about my production.  I was way above the median.

They make me feel better.  Not richer.  :)

Ken - Thanks for posting the numbers. We hear too many false statistics in the industry, it is good to know what the reality is.

Good numbers. They make me feel better. I guess there are a lot of part times that bring the numbers down??

Ken I hear ya! At least we know the reality even if no one else does. My production so far this year is not so bad all things considered. My farm market is a bit lower priced so I have to work twice as hard. We are still here!

Hi Ken - I saw those numbers, too, and they sure made me feel better, too.  My numbers were way above those, thankfully, but like you, I don't feel any richer.  This year I hope to....  ;-)

The reason the numbers are so low is they most likely include part time agents and those who are not active or selling very much.

Keep doing what you are doing and you will soon feel richer too!

See, I told you that you were a GOOD REALTOR!!!!!

Ken - Do the NAR statistics tell the whole story? Would you think the stats are derived from IRS returns? For example, maybe the gross sales income was a certain amount, but how much was spent in order to earn that amount? I remember spending $10,000 in expenses one year in order to "earn" $14,000 in income. I often joke that if a cop were to stop me in a vehicle, I could easily be charged with (the old time vagrancy  misdemeanor) "no visible means of support."   :)

I agree my numbers look better than the stats show.  I wonder how many agents will be in the business by the end of this year.

Ken- Interesting stats. I do feel like the others here that the numbers are lower due to the part timers that are pulling down the numbers. That being said I feel better about my numbers too. Better but not richer!

Best,

Scott

Hi Scott, Barbara, John, Jim, Don, Amie, Mary, Ann, Sharon, Chuck and Jim.  Thanks for stopping by.

It might be our gross incomes too.  Expenses might drive it down even more.

Morning Ken,

Thanks for the informative post. Always good to have a base to judge one's performance.

I too feel better/not richer -  I wonder if the statistics are broken down by area ?  Certainly price point skews the numbers a bit - Also wonder if they track transactions which may be a bit easier to assess nationwide -  Though there are so many realtors who just dabble in the business, it may be hard to determine what a full time realtor is / s/be doing...

Thanks for the info!!

In the May/June issue of The Real Estate Professional  (REBAC) - page 26, Author Carla Cross cites the following statistics: "Over 65% of agents are part timers. It is estimated that 50% of them fail within the first year in the business, and 75% are out in two years"

06/02/2008 06:54 AM by Jim Dvorovy, REALTOR® Stark County, Ohio (Cutler Real Estate)

Ken - I'm surprised by the numbers...  I think the old saying is true "20% of the agents do 80% of the transactions.

06/02/2008 09:01 AM by Debbie Summers (RE/MAX Central - Lake Mary, FL)

Hi Debbie, Jim, Marcia, and Hal.  Thanks for stopping by.

I bet that number is 5% of the agents are doing 95% of the business.
