I was hugging a Realtor goodbye when a shy, timid, young woman approached me and I welcomed her in.  She waited outside, however, and said in a meek voice that she only had a question for me.  I heard a beautiful Russian accent and invited her question.  She wanted to know price point of my community.

I explained I am $180's-230's and that includes the gorgeous golf course views (as all of my lots are on the course).  She looked concerned and I asked her where she wanted to be.  She said $150's and turned to go.  I asked her if I could offer her cold water and some a/c while I find her a community to view that works for her.

She was astonished.  She came inside with her friends and she explained how a different sales counselor at "Brand X" had been "mean to her".  She told me a home-owner who lives in one of their homes said she could buy one for this price point and he simply dismissed her and said he didn't know who said that and he simply could not help her.  Then he went back to what he was doing.  I could tell it really hurt her feelings.

Have we come to this as a society?  If you don't make me money, I have no use for you?  I got her and her friends situated, cold drinks, and began phone call after phone call.  She kept saying I must be too busy for her but this only made me more determined to help.

It only took me 10 minutes to find her 3 communities in her price point, with phone numbers and directions.  She was so thankful that it truly made my day.  She actually asked me why I helped her and I told her because what you give to the universe, it returns.  She nodded, took my hands, and told me in that soothing accent, "I am blessing you now.  Thank you."  She asked for my card in case she got lost and was on her way.

I find it repulsive that someone could be so busy they could not spend 10 minutes to help someone.  You see, I do not believe in "random" acts of kindness.  There is nothing random about being kind.  Being kind takes forethought, a genuine concern for mankind, and time/money/effort out of your life.

So, do me a favor... pay it forward!  Next time you have a chance to help a stranger, even if it won't (at the time) benefit you, DO IT!  The reward is making a difference, right then and there.  Plus, this world is round... what goes around, comes around!

Sorry for the rant.  I hate to point fingers but we all have a chance every day to make this world a better place to live in... as Nike says, "JUST DO IT!"

Sara, fantastic post. Kudos to you for doing the right thing. I wish there were more people like you.

Hi Sara - this is a wonderful post, and not a rant at all in my book.  I, too, wish more people would be a little kinder.  What is so wrong about just being nice and helpful?  We've all needed help at some point, and likely will again.  No doubt we'd all like someone to be nice to us when we need that help.

My mom used to always tell me and my sisters while we were growing up that it's so much easier to just be nice to people - no extra effort needed at all.  And then there's alway The Golden Rule, which too many seem to forget all about at times.

Great post!

It is always best to help as best as we can. Not only is it the right thing to do. It's the only thing to do. Much of the time, I believe, people asking for "the impossible" are just testing us. We are NOT alone.

Sara,

Well said!  You're the type of person that makes real estate the best profession.

Sara, Great post. And I too thank you for being so kind.  I really have a hard time when I hear of agents who act like it's beneath them to work with someone who can't afford to buy within a specific price range.  GRRRRRRR.  Also, I love the Pay it Forward system.

Sara, You rock!  That's exactly what we should all do.  Everyone deserves respect for what they are trying to do.  You never know when one of her friends or relatives might be in the position to buy in your price point and you have a great referral but the bottom line is you give her the dignity she deserved and you felt better for being a nice person.

Sara - GOOD FOR YOU!  That is awesome!  I have run into so many people that were treated rudely or completely ignored when they wanted a home under $150.  Why?  I just don't get it!  Thanks so much for being the great person that you are!  You help to give us a great name!

Wow.  Thank you all for being so kind.  I did not expect any "thumbs up" for this, I was just frustrated at the treatment of this young lady.  You guys made my day.  THANK YOU.

I agree with so many of you.  Why does a buyer at a lower price point deserve any less treatment?  In fact, it is these buyers who need our care the most.  They are often more naive and we have all bought a "first home" before and it is already so terrifying!

Thank you for your supposrt and for being the type of people who make this world a more beautiful place!!

It's awful to hear that a "professional" treated someone so unkindly.  I guess they didn't learn the Golden Rule.  Unfortunately there are a lot of unhappy people in the world that lash out at others to make themselves feel better. I encountered one today, myself.  I chose to pray for that person instead of reciprocating their rudeness.  Thanks for being one of the nice people!

Thank you for sharing. It is too bad the dollar sometimes gets in the way of doing the right thing. You,however, are a "Daymaker". And I'm glad those commenting are "paying it forward" right back to you.

Sara-  Good for you.  I always tell my children, the hardest thing in the world to be, is to be kind.  You're right there is nothing random about it!  All the best!

Sara you so did the right thing and you obviously live by higher standards. I'm so glad you posted this for all of us to read. I applaud your integrity and your humanity. The world would be such a better place if we all lived by "do unto others".

Sara:  It's not nice to read about someone who cared enough to do the right thing.  I believe that what goes around comes around.  Who knows how your acti of kindness will impact this woman's life for the better.  Just think, she may find the perfect home because of you.  Excellent.

WOW, someone helped someone without getting paid.  Customer Service?  Such a novel idea.  I have always held fast to the principle that you help people.  Deep down in it maybe a selfish reason but even so, it works for me.  A long long time ago, a jewler once told me that he gives the same service to the client buying a $29.00 gold chain as the one buying the $4000 wedding set.  Because you never know who the person buying the $29.00 gold chain knows or will become.  In my case, I was buying a $19.00 item from him.  Within a year I was back buying my wifes wedding ring.  Over the years, he has made a lot of money from me because I would go no where else to buy my wife jewlry.

His principle stuck with me.  Many times, I give free advice regarding mortgage loans or grants.  I know one of these days, it will come back to me ten fold.

Good Job Sara and I know it will come back to you soon.

I have a plaque on my wall that reads

" No act of kindness no matter how small

Is ever wasted"

If only more people would remember this, the world would be a better place.

Have A Great Day

TRUE TRUE!  I try to remember to send positive energy to the offender every day!  You never know, maybe my positive energy will change whatever was giving him his prevailing thoughts of negativity!

Sara - I enjoyed the post and the comments.  I particularly lliked Tony's story about the jeweler.  I was a bit shocked to hear how a different sales counselor had acted.  Bad behavior is bad business.  Happy to hear that you could help her out.

Sara, I also believe in helping people, no matter whose clients they are.  For the most part, that is the culture here, in Minnesota.  People should be kind and helpful to each other, no matter what the circumstance.
