Seminole County school district - more wasted tax dollars

Seminole County schools (along with so many other school districts, cities, and counties) has cried the blues about budget cuts and how deep they are.  I just want to re-iterate what I have said about government waste in Central Florida.

According to the Orlando Business Journal, in 2007 Lake Mary High School was the #5 user of water in ALL of Central Florida.  The school is closed on weekends, closed on holidays, closed at night, and yet is still #5.  To put it in perspective, they used 3 times more water than Sea World did last year.  This is absolutely preposterous!  Is it any wonder they can't handle any tax cuts???  Give me a break!

Lake Mary High School blames it on their water irrigation system.  Hello, isn't the whole region under revised water restrictions? My lawn has turned brown because of the restrictions.  Why doesn't the school set the example on water conservation and cut way back on watering their grass too?

The school district still has crybaby budget language on their website.  Is anybody still gullible enough to believe the garbage being fed to us by the Seminole County School District?

Just a note to the school district.  First tighten up on all this wasted money, then pull out your 2001 school budget and adjust for increased students and inflation and cut out EVERYTHING ELSE.  Once you do all that, then tell us about how broke you really are.  Until then, stop acting like you think the citizens of Seminole County are stupid.  We know how to do basic math!  We were educated in your public schools, weren't we?

Rob-

Wow.  Three TIMES more water than Sea World!  Yikes.  Oh, I am a product of the ORANGE County school system, so I actually MAY NOT be able to do basic math.  :)  Maybe Seminole County DOES have a chance of whipping their "poor me" math by me...  Uh, naw.  Three TIMES more water than Sea World is very telling, though.  How is that even possible?

I'm with Lisa... WOW, that's shocking.  Think of all the great ways that money could be used.  They need to fix this problem NOW!

I'm sorry, but how exactly is a high school supposed to control how long students leave water running for when they wash their hands? Or how many times they needlessly flush the toilets? Maybe parents should teach their children something about water conservation.

Maybe if the Florida legislature adequately funded schools, maybe they could afford to fix leaky faucets.

@ Concerned Teacher.  Thank you for your service to the community.  I realize that most teachers are underpaid for the job they perform which is a shame.

Regarding the water issue.  This is actually a story from about 3 years ago.  From what I recall, the culprit for this extraordinary use of water was not a bunch of kids washing their hands.  It was from major overwatering of the football field and grounds by the school's sprinkler system.  Which was apparently corrected after the newspaper embarassed the school by running this story.

On the same note, the Seminole school district while one of the best ones in the state is still very behind the times and managed poorly - just look at the beating Vogel is taking over his double dipping in the DROP retirement system while beating the drum about needing to raise the sales tax.  The truth is that the government made hundreds of millions in profits when real estate prices skyrocketed and squandered it away instead of stockpiling the money for a rainy day.  Then when the tax revenue reduced to more normal circumstances (property taxes and budgets are about the same as they were in 2004 and the student population has decreased) the school says the budget is now Draconian. Give me a break!

In my opinion, we need some leadership in the schools to start getting away from brick and mortar giant babysitting services.  The private sector has already embraced internet classrooms, distance learning, and real world training. The schools need to be focusing on how to function in business, industry, and the information age instead of memorizing quadratic equations and lines from Shakespeare.
