Storm NamesJust to be clear, I'm not concerned that Minot North Dakota will be directly effected by any of the names to the left... that would be one heck of a storm!

What prompted me to share the list however is that it is part of a news letter I received with my flood insurance reminder.

Minot North Dakota has seen it's share of floods. While not frequent, what we have experienced has been devastating... take it from someone who lost their home and most of my belongings in 2011.

When I purchased my home in 2001 it was not in the flood plain. In fact the insurance agent I purchased my flood insurance from thought I was nuts and did not want to sell it to me. I insisted, having come from an area that regularly flooded I didn't want to take any chances when the river is only a block away from my home.

Today I recommend all homeowners purchase any kind of water related insurance you can get for your home. If we had not purchased flood insurance there is the very real possibility that we would not be living in a home of our own any more today or for the rest of my life as the cost of the devastation was so great.

Note the 3 colors to the map below. Very few States had no flooding last year. I hope North Dakota remains gray on the map again in 2019 but who knows... that's why there is flood insurance and I'm prepared with mine!

Good afternoon Bob "RealMan" Timm -  what you say is a no brainer for me.  Ask for it, your insurance agent may not suggest it otherwise.

It is part of life as we know it in California.  So far even though the authorities were worrried all is well in our world.  Our plants and hills are greening up.  A

Grant Schneider My insurance agent couldn't believe it because after a 1,000 year flood in 1969 they built dikes to withstand the same flood plus 10' so they figured that would never happen again. 42 years later, the flood of 2011 surpassed the the 1,000 year flood by 20 feet. I was one of the less then 10% who had flood insurance when it was needed.

Good afternoon Bob "RealMan" Timm ,

A great post to remind us there is a reason for flood insurance and looking at the map is pretty telling! Yikes!!

I sit on one of the most elevated lots in my subdivision.  There is a sizable flood plane between me and the river which is approximately two blocks away.  For the most part I feel safe.

Yes, we too have had major floods repeatedly in zones that were classified in 100+ year flood zones.  Flood insurance is a very good policy to add on to your homeowner policy.

Thank you Roy Kelley . As the son of an insurance man (although he was a Life insurance agent) I've always known the value of being insured.

That's true Peter den Boer but we do not get that many storms here in Minot North Dakota. The worst season I remember may have had 5 or 6. The good thing about winter storms is it's very rare anyone actually has to go out into them and the storm virtually never enters the home. Most people who die in a winter storm are people who decide they need to get out on the road and have an accident or old men like me shoveling after the storm has passed.
