It Is Okay To Quit

It is okay to quit.  What? Never quit. We have heard it often.  But is it correct?  Whether it's a job.  A class.  A relationship.  A bad habit.   Is it ever a good idea or a good plan to quit? How about those yearly resolutions that we often see--do we quit resolving to go to the gym on a regular basis for example?

Winners never quit and quitters never win

                                                           - Vince Lombardi

There are seemingly countless quotes that discuss "never quitting" but what about the advice from others on the value of quitting.  I found some including this one:

If you never quit anything,

you're going to have less time for the things that really matter

                                                          - Eric Barker

Famous or not so famous words aside, we can make a case that favors your position or any position.  Quitting may even depend on the circumstances at hand.  Quitting for the sake of quitting is a choice and regardless of the reason it is a definite decision.  Right or wrong.

Who am I to say?  Not for each situation but I do believe that quitting may make sense for some and in some cases.  I pondered. For no apparent reason.  And because of that it may make pondering a worthwhile effort.

Michael Jacobs ~ as you ponder, I ponder... Pondering helps us learn and grow... I would say/think that quitting smoking is great! On the other hand, quitting drinking water or breathing air -not so great! In general, some things are worth pursuing while others are worth letting go...  Bottom line... Pondering is worthwhile, so thank you for that and so much more....

Morning Michael.

Some things are worth quiting.  I quit complaining about how my life was going and it turned out to be better once I quit whining.  I quit worrying about tomorrow and concentrate on just today and so on.  It's all a matter of perspective

Michael, I love Barbara and Jeff's comments, and adjustments can be made after you TRIED something, but did not produce results you expected.

It definitely depends on what is being quit, I can think of many things that are good to quit, smoking, consuming sugar, doing drugs, running with the wrong crowd, etc.

I totally agree, Michael. There are times it's appropriate if not mandatory to quit (smoking, abusive relationships, drugs, etc.). What's most important is understanding the nuances of when to quite and when not.

On of the biggest downfalls of agents in our business is that they endlessly accomodate. There is always a tipping point we need to be mindful of.

Good afternoon Michael Jacobs ,

Pondering is always a worthwhile effort. It helps us weigh the pros and cons. Sometimes quitting is the only plausible answer, quit while ahead, learn when to fold them and so many other phrases come to mind..just do it and be aware of the consequences and move on.

Michael, it is ok to quit, I like to look at it as adjusting or taking a different path. That can be healthy and leave one feeling freed and renewed. If my inner voice tells me to quit I've learned to listen or at the very least look into making a change.

Pondering is a wonderful thing to do. And I agree - it all depends upon what you're quitting. Things that should never have been started are good things to quit.

When I start thinking unproductive thoughts I tell myself to quit - the words are not quite that, but I say "Stop. Think a better thought." And then I do!
