Cold Winter Blasts are not Pet Friendly

By

It goes without saying...or should that leaving an animal outside in the winter for any length of time is "cruel and un-animal loving like treatment."  Our cats are not interested in the outside and the litter box works as compared to the walks of the neighborhood dogs.

Catching up on neighborhood Facebook groups...I thought I would share a suggestion or two that may well work for other dogs in cold hay balesclimates.

First...a "blanketed" area of hay to walk on is far more comfortable than ice, snow or freezing pavement or ground.  Here you can find that kind of "ground cover" at pet stores and some more rural stores.

sox In addition....a trip to the Dollar Store can make that necessary outdoor trip for Fido a lot easier.  Go to the sock department...depending on the size of the dog's feet...get a few pairs of infant or children's socks.  Then go to the hair accessories and you will find pony tail wraps of all sizes that you will use to secure the newly found fashion statement to the dog's legs.
ponytail bands
Looks to be more comfortable than stiff boots...add

as many layers as the temperature requires...easily washed and such a fashion statement...the other dogs in the neighborhood will be jealous !

Hello Sally K. & David L. Hanson, I hope all pet parents will be responsible and keep them indoors overnight. If it's too cold for humans, it's too cold for the fur babies.

You could start a new fashion trend with those doggie socks. A great suggestion.

When we would go to winter football games my mother would always say to take newspaper to put under our feet to help keep them warmer.  It worked!

My son bought boots for his dog - and oh how he hates them! Watching him try to walk is funny. (I know, not nice to laugh at anyone's discomfort.) Fortunately, he doesn't need them very often - and if you're not watching, he doesn't keep them on very long when (we think) he does!

We're fortunate - our temps haven't even gone down to zero this year, so the dogs don't mind getting out in the snow to do their business. My son's dog has short hair so doesn't want to stay out long, but my big furry Katie will stay as long as I let her.

Back when we had a dog who couldn't be trusted in the house, we had an enclosed space by the back door and a heated bed inside. Also a heated water dish. She had plenty of hair to keep her warm, but we couldn't stand the idea of her being cold.

And then there's my old horse. He wears a blanket all winter - with a liner added if it gets below zero.

If an animal has a human, they should NOT be made to suffer.

Morning Sally.

We've tried that on our Sheldon.  He just stood in place and would not move.  Silly boy

Great reminder, Sally, that extreme cold is also dangerous to our pets. Hopefully, you are taking care... I saw the Milwaukee temperature this morning on the news and can't wrap my mind around it.

My collie would not like the socks on his paws! He likes the cool air as he is so hairy. He actually has two coats of hair. This is a great idea, though. I'm sure his feet are a little cold, even if he won't admit it!

Sally, this is so important to share. I was just talking to a client who put a call into animal control because her neighbors dog is outside with nothing but snow to lay on. It breaks my heart that some people treat animals so poorly. I wish I could adopt them all!

Good morning Sally. This is excellent advice. My dogs hate the cold and are disoriented by it as well. They want to go out but as soon as they do they want back in.

S & D, those are creative ideas for sure. I love the sock idea. Of course, I'd much see pets inside this time of year.

Great tips. However, our chocolate lab, Zeke, who is 11 would not like the socks. He would have them off in no time. Zeke loves the snow and could play in it for hours. The cold days like we are having this week... he just may not take them off :)

Great suggestion!  Although I don't have a dog and live in the desert, I used to live in the midwest so understand those cold winters.  BRRR!
