Thoughts About Improving Health in the Aging Process

By
Real Estate Agent with Elizabeth Anne Weintraub, Broker DRE #00697006

If you haven't experienced this yet, let me share that when you get older, there comes a time in your life when your body abandons you. For some of us, it starts in your late 50s. Suddenly, you begin to gain weight even though you have not changed your diet. Further, if you rarely exercise, that lack of movement also will take a toll on your body.

It totally sucks. Pretty soon you find you can't do things that you used to do. Like balance on a ladder. Or squat to look at a bug. Fortunately, there is help to stop that degeneration. Although, truth be told, I think most people just adapt to the changes and adjust for restricted movements. They make compensations, too, without even realizing it.

The way I look at it, we can take charge of our bodies and try to reduce the damage nature inflicts. It just happens out of nowhere. Personally, the day I will probably super regret is the day when I discover I can no longer eat jalapenos like they are chocolate, so I relish each and every bite now. And maybe that particular malfunction will never happen.

I am glad you are being proactive in trying to stay ahead of the aging process, Elizabeth.  Far too many surrender to it, and that is to their detriment!  One thing I notice after I swim, is the world just seems brighter.  Fitness programs also enhance our feeling of well being!

I feel better when I leave than when I enter the gym, LOL. Hate having to go there and institute a new regime in my life, but I do it.

Today there was some tiny little Millennial sitting on the rowing machine (they only have two of that type) checking her cellphone. I tapped her shoulder because she was wearing earplugs and listening to music I presume, and said, "Excuse me, are you using this machine?" She says yes and goes back to looking at her cellphone.

I continued to stand there, and she finally put her phone away and started rowing. How rude. There was no I'm sorry or anything. No wonder people don't like Millennials.

Thankfuly, Elizabeth, the "maturing" process has not hit me in a big way. I do have some arthritis in my thumbs and will need cataract surgery at some point... but overall hanging in there. Fortunately I have good genes and have exercised and watched my diet for what seems like forever (if not my entire life). But, I read without reading glasses and use distance glasses only for driving and can still fit into my size 4 petite jeans. That's actually my "test." When the jeans seems tight, it's time to get more watchful.

Elizabeth, age does take a toll on our bodies, and wish I could drop SEVERAL pounds.   I can still squat, and balance on the ladder.  Just had to change the exterior light on the garage!

Elizabeth- I subscribe to the "use it or lose it" policy. Larry and I first noticed how we and our friends were getting older when we all were getting out of our car after a long ride. The creaking sounds and the sounds we made were definitely old.

Good for you Elizabeth, the battle cry of aging "Move it, or lose it." We are also pro-active about our health and it makes some of our relatives and friends crazy when we mention we don't take any prescription drugs. Our prescription is exercise and good nutrition.  By the way, our gym is mostly baby boomers and seniors - I LOVE it for that reason. Mom even goes and attends a silver sneakers class - she's 92.  ( Also, I know Mark Lindsey really well - he, and his wife Deb, are also great about nutrition.)

Elizabeth Weintraub Sacramento Real Estate Agent, Top 1% of Lyon Agents hi Elizabeth... I did get your note. I had an insanely crazy day, which included two hours at the vet needing to put my cat, Oliver, to sleep. I still don't know how I got through the day I was devastated and by the time I walked through my door just after 6pm did not want to deal with anything or anyone.

Joan Cox I did not notice changes until I was 65, so you might still have a few more years.

Kathy Streib Well, the good news is you don't have to creak. You are in charge of that.
