The Notary Can NOT Tell You What Form To Use

I'm not sure about every State but in the State of North Dakota the Notary can not tell you what kind of a notarization you need for your document (even if he/she knows) because that would be "practicing" law without a license.  The two most common notarization's are Acknowledgments and Jurats. If you don't know what you need... don't ask the notary!

When you want a document notarized but it does not have the State required "notarial language" on it we can add either an acknowledgment or a jurat to it to accomplish your intended purpose HOWEVER we would be practicing law if we told you, or even advised you, which one to use. Therefore if you want us to notarize a document, such as a bill of sale, and it does not have the notarial language on it you may wish to Google those two legal forms (Acknowledgment and Jurat) so you know which one to ask for when you arrive at our office.

Morning Bob.

Our notary license is given every 10 years, the renewal is minimal, I'm on my second decade, my third will start in 2020

I didn't even realize this option was a thing. In general, we don't use notaries for real estate documentation here. All I know about getting things notarized is when I have to get one of my personal documents notarized. I know enough not to sign it until I get to the notary, show my ID, sign, they stamp it and sign it and we're done.

Good morning Bob. Many are clueless and likely get hints from those who cross the line. Enjoy your day

Kat Palmiotti you have more knowledge then many. I couldn't tell you how many times people bring signed docs in to be notarized.

No doubt a lot of notaries do cross the line Wayne Martin but I value my license to much to do that. However I will give them a written explanation of what the purpose of each one is and they usually get it after that.

Good morning, Bob - wise words to follow. Working/advising outside one's area of expertise is often the start in a house-of-cards-like mishap. Beware. Be careful.

Hello Bob,  Funny but in our state, no they can not tell you what form to fill out either.  Hope it is warming up there.

I'm glad you get it Michael Jacobs , a lot of people do not and they get angry when you won't tell them what they think you know.
