"Happiness is catching up with an old acquaintance during a game of golf."
-Carol Williams
Last Friday I had the opportunity to play golf with a High School classmate of my brother who graduated one year ahead of me. Gary and I hadn't seen each other since he graduated in 1969. Gulp! That is nearly 50 years ago.
My brother and I went to a very small rural High School in Corbett, Oregon. For those of you familiar with the Columbia Gorge area east of Portland, Corbett is near the very popular tourist attraction Crown Point. The Vista House is the visitor center at Crown Point. There is a lot to do and see in the Columbia River Gorge so if you ever get to the area, make time to drive the old scenic highway and enjoy the plethora of waterfalls and natural beauty of the area... including the very well-known Multnomah Falls and the historic lodge onsite.
There were about 200 kids in the 4 year High School we attended, with 39 students in my brothers class and 44 in my graduating class. Gary and I were lamenting about what an academically and athletically gifted group we had during those years. As you can imagine, in a school that size, we all knew everyone in the entire school. I can't say Gary and I were actually friends in High School but we certainly knew each other. And, Gary's younger brother was in my class. Gary and I have been Facebook friends for a few years and have discovered we share a lot of common values and a love for the game of golf.
Gary and his wife sold their home in Oregon and have travelled extensively in their motor home over that last several years. They purchased a home in Sun City West last year so at least have a home base again. When he found out I'd be nearby for a few weeks this winter he wanted to be sure we got together for a game. Last Friday we made it happen. We had a lot of fun playing and catching up on a small portion of the 50 years of life since High School.
We are hoping to get together again with his wife for dinner before I head home later this month. We might even sneak in another game of golf.
What a wonderful thing that was. Golf and a classmate. What fun for you both.

How lovely, Carol, to catch up after 50 years and over an activity you love, no less. And here I thought I had a small graduating class in NYC with just 54. But I bet my 8th grade class was smaller than yours... just 12 of us... 4 girls and 8 boys. Nice odds, don't you think?

Good morning, James
I bet you do make it to your 60th and 70th. You might be the only one to attend your 80th. LOL. No bets on the game today but let's just say I'll be cheering for the west coast team.
Hi Wayne Martin
How wonderful you found a "brother" at military school. I hope you're having a great visit.
Hi Brian England
I sure hope I can keep coming down even after Connie moves to Wenatchee. Guess there's no reason not to except I won't have a free room. LOL

Hi Michael Jacobs
Yes... I felt pretty special hanging out with an upper classman and he was a good sport and bought refreshments because I scored better than he did. LOL

Hi Sharon Lee
Interesting after all these years to learn more about each other and enjoy some golf together. I'm sure there will be more games in our future.
Hi Nina Hollander
Wow... 54 IS small for New York City. And 12 is definitely smaller than my grade school graduation. That wasn't in New York City was it?

Carol Williams hi Carol... yes it was. I lived in NYC from the age of 3 until 17 when I left for Washington DC to attend college. Private schools were quite small in class size.
Oh, that explains it... private school.
Go for it Carol, sneak in another round of golf. Always great to see old friends from many years ago.

Thanks, Will Hamm
I'm certainly hoping that happens! I need more practice!
Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel
Yes, it was very fun. We enjoyed the game and catching up.
It can be quite shocking to reconnect with folks you haven't seen in decades. A few years ago, I helped arrange a reunion of my classmates pictured in a 4th grade photo. It was really neat to find them, let alone meet an an old neighborhood pizza parlor still in existence. I hadn't seen some of them for almost 50 years. It was rewarding and shocking at the same time.

Hi Carol- now that I'm back in my hometown of Houston, I am looking forward to attending the luncheons my high school alumni group has.

Hi Carol. I am lucky to have a group of girlfriends from high school who get together each month for dinner.

Oh my, I love this story, Carol! We had 128 in 4 years (9-12 were altogether back then, as you know) and like you, we knew everyone in the school. I love reconnecting with my former classmates and reminiscing about those wonderful years we spent so much time together!
I'm so glad that you guys were finally able to play a game of golf and that you were able to reconnect after all of these years too.
Hi Myrl Jeffcoat
I can't even imagine what it would be like to connect with kids from 4th grade I hadn't seen since then. That's so cool the old neighborhood pizza place was still there. I moved away from my grade school after 6th. Haven't seen any of them since. Gary and I are Facebook friends so at least we had some clue what we looked like at this point in life.
Hi Pam Dent
That's great! My sister-in-law has a group of friends like that. Unfortunately, I moved away shortly after graduation and only see classmates at our reunions every 5 or 10 years.
How wonderful! Not only because you got to see a friend from five decades ago, but because you got to get some more golf in! I hope you are able to do both the dinner and additional golf before you depart.
