Saturday evening I was out having a couple of drinks in dowtown Missoula, MT, with some friends of mine; we were having a going away party for one of them who has re-enlisted in the Marines.

After a couple of beers and a burger at the Missoula Club, known to the locals as Mo Club, infamously taglined by "Warm beer and Cold burgers", we had quite the surprise visitor.

There had been about 15 people in the bar all night, 10 of which were in our group, when a few men in black suites walked in with ear pieces. A couple of us joked, "those look like secret service guys... what dorks."

Of course, you can imagine my shock when suddenly, in walks the former President Bill Clinton!!!  We all kind of looked at eachother and shared a few whispers:

"That dude looks like Bill Clinton.. haha".

"Is that Bill Clinton"?

"I think that's Bill Clinton"...

"You guys, Bill Clinton is here"!

He has been in Montana for the last couple of days campaigning, but no one expected this! We got some pictures, and chatted him up for a bit, but before long, the bar was so packed, you could hardly move!  He stuck around for about two hours, had a couple of beers and a burger and headed back to his hotel.  He was so friendly and happy to take pictures with everyone.

We live in a fairly small town, so you can imagine the excitment when anyone that is somewhat famous comes to hang out in a public place; let alone a former President.

Anyway, of course there are supporters and non-supporters, but regardless, it's pretty cool to meet a former President of the United States!  For the curious, I've posted the article from our local newspaper below the picture.  Enjoy :)

Mo Club gets surprise visit from Clinton

By BETSY COHEN of the Missoulian

The Saturday night bar crowd at the Mo Club took a double take when a big white-haired man walked into the iconic watering hole around 9 p.m. surrounded by a posse of unusually serious men. All sorts of people frequent the infamous downtown Missoula bar, but never a president.

“That's Bill Clinton. That's really Bill Clinton,” went the murmurs, mushrooming as they hopscotched down the barstools. “Everyone was star-struck at first,” said Rob Schulte, who often is the one serving up drinks at the Mo Club, but on this night was on the other side of the bar enjoying the occasion with friends.

“He really went out of his way to meet everyone and say hello, and everyone was really happy that he did,” Schulte said. “It's not like he needed to be introduced. Everyone knew who he was.”

For a Saturday night, the crowd was fairly light and happy to be hanging with the former president, Schulte said. By all appearances, Clinton also seemed happy to be mixing it up with Missoula locals. He ordered a Mo burger and a beer, and ate it standing up in the back of the bar while talking with the enthusiastic patrons, many of whom pulled out their cell phones and asked to snap his photograph. Clinton was so accommodating, Schulte said, that he posed for a picture with all the Mo Club bartenders, and after all the meeting and greeting, the former president ordered the bar a round of Washington Red Apples - a concoction of schnapps, whiskey and cranberry juice. The shots went out to about 70 people, Schulte said.

Once word got out about the unusual party downtown, the fairly mellow crowd was joined by all their friends - who either got a text message or phone call about Clinton's visit. Within 30 minutes, the place was as packed as it is on a Grizzly game day, Schulte said. Clinton stayed for about two hours, and when he left - with a Mo Club T-shirt as a parting gift - everyone was even more star-struck.

“It was quite the experience. Everyone was like ‘holy cow,' ” Schulte said. “He was really cool and really went out of his way to talk with people.” “He didn't act like a big shot. He just seemed happy to be at the Mo Club,” he said. “It was definitely quite the experience.”

I have to agree Erika,  whether you like or dislike, voted for him or not, a past President in person is among the great "meets" as far as excitement goes.  Pretty awesome.  Glad you got photos or no one would believe it! :)

That is pretty cool Erika.  President Clinton has always been good about taking pictures and shaking hands.  He is definitely a former President I would like to meet one day.  Good picture there, definitely doesn't look to be tampered with.  Something you will be able to brag about for a long time.

Wow! Very exciting. I am a big Bill fan, seems like a great guy, and there is no denying the economic success we had under him. Obviously it would be cool to meet ANY pres but my tops would be (living or dead)

1) FDR

2) JFK

3) Lincoln

4) Clinton

5) Carter

6) Ford

Gary, even the Obama campaigners were going crazy. There were a bunch of college-aged kids with the Obama shirts on that were snapping pictures :)

Bill and Barbara,  he was so awesome.  You always wonder what people are going to be like.  He was way more personable than some of our "local celebs".  At one point, some of his body guards were trying to get him to leave, and he wanted to stay so he could meet everyone.  Very impressive!!

Oh, and thank you for the website update.  Over the weekend, our server center in Houston, TX had an electrical fire and knocked out about 9,000 other companies.  It destroyed about 3 floors, and they started to recover them, beginning with the top floor.  Lucky us, we were on level 1.  It's finally back up though as of early this afternoon! :)

Republican or Democrat, everybody describes Mr Clinton as warm and personable in person.  He is a pro as a politician and a genuine friendly person.  I don't care for his politics but nobody works a room better than Bill.  Mrs Clinton has been described as all of Bill's bad politics but without his charm.

It is a great story,  Erika - and I expect he enjoyed it as much as you all did.

Monica, ya it's something I'll definitely remember for a long time to come!  I'm usually the one is the wrong place at the wrong time, but this time it worked out!

Stacy, that's so cool!  Awesome that he's stayed so personable after all these years; and even through a presidency!

Don, definitely!  I lived in DC for a summer while my dad was working out there and Bill was President at that time.  We went to church one morning, which happened to be the same church The Clinton family attended.  They were attending the second mass, so when we came out of the first, there was like three blocks that were guarded off and security people all over the place.  All the locals were VERY annoyed, but for us, it was VERY cool!

Clint, I know, I told Mike that yesterday morning!  Maybe I should start carrying one around in my back pocket, just in case.  I should have at least remembered to give him a pen... although I'm sure the security guards wouldn't have been happy with that.  He did walk away with a Mo Club shirt, however.  When he was at UM a couple weeks back, he got a Montana Grizzly jersey.  Hope all is going well for you guys!

Ted, great points there :)  A great personality is what makes a real politician I guess.  I've known a few, and it's always so delighting when they "say" they remember you, whether they really do or not, but it makes you feel pretty good anyway!  Hopefully he did... it's probably a nice change to being all dressed up in a suit and tie with a bunch of high rollers!

Big surprise that Bill Clinton would stop off at a small town bar and put his arms around the local cuties.  Saying that's unusual is like saying it's unusual for Bill to pop into a fast food joint for a greasy burger.

I read today that Vanity Fair has an article coming out about his hard partying ways and a near intervention by staffers who thought the ex-Prez was out of hand with women and booze while on Hilary's campaign trail.

Looks like Vanity Fair will [and should] stand by their story...his supporters must be so proud!

When he was running for office, I got stuck in a traffic jam, alongside JFK's car. I got to yell across to him, through the opened car windows.  That was before the days, when the Secret Service shut down the roads, that candidates travel.  I also heard Bobby Kennedy speak, when he was running for NY Senate and got to shake his hand and get his autograph.

No matter what your politics, the office of the Presidency commands respect, and getting to hear/meet past, present or future Presidents is really cool.   Great story!!

Thanks everyone for all of your great comments!  Although many of us have the urge to make funny comments (I did myself several times over!) about his behavior, Bill was a great person and seemed delighted to be out and about visiting with folks.  It's funny; as I can imagine it's a politicians job to do these kind of public appearances, he seemed to be enjoying himself more than many others do.

You can almost always tell the difference between those who HAVE to do something and those who WANT to do something for their job.  Those who WANT to, enjoy the time much more!   We're much more delightful when we WANT to do something!  A lesson and reminder for us all in our professions!

Thanks again and I"m glad you enjoyed the story!
