Four Score And Seven Years Ago
Four Score And Seven Years Ago
Many of the 272 words found in the Abraham Lincoln Gettysburg Address may have been forgotten but you likely recall those words in the famous beginning.
And while this post is not a tribute to that literary work, it is a tribute of sorts from me. I remember hearing those words many years ago in our fifth grade United States history class It seems like such a big number. Eighty Seven. Actually considering the age of our country today and the world we live, it could be considered almost a blip on history but a certainly a significant passing of time nonetheless.
Today, marks the 87th birthday of my father. While he wouldn't think of having his name associated with a man of Mr. Lincoln's stature I was pondering the other day on the subject of time. On Planet Earth and the the many changes that have occurred in the last 87 years.
Countless inventions. Numerous interpretations of ideas from the past. Many scientific discoveries. Debunkings too. You get the idea. A whole lot has happened.
And here are some quotes by Mr. Lincoln that I believe influenced the thoughts, teachings and lessons I learned from my Dad, people of his generation as well as those before him and since.
Give me six hours to chop down a tree
and I will spend the first four sharpening the axe
You can fool all the people some of the time
and some of the people all of the time,
but you cannot fool all the people all the time
You cannot escape the responsibility of tomorrow
by evading the responsibility of today
Happy Birthday, Dad
