Wow - they have finally finished building out the old Mokulele Highway from 2 lanes to 4 lanes.  It only took them 6 years to create the extra 2 lanes along this 6.5 mile stretch... no streams,gulches or freeways to cross, no buildings to relocate... just level vacant land.  Talk about "Maui Time"!

This highway which connects the main city of Kahului with the south shore opened up last Wednesday, May 28th, and the next day I had the chance to try it out.  I was going south to look at some Kihei condos for sale, with a client.  As we drove back from Kihei to the north shore, we see the road crews taking up the old yellow striping and preparing to put the white stripes down.  This should really improve driving conditions on the island, and will probably save some lives.  The old highway was the scene of a few head-on collisions and fatalities over the years.  A bike and pedestrian path with native plant landscaping runs alongside the new highway.  Once it fills in, and the trees grow, this will be a nice partially shaded bike-way... a welcome improvement.  Come on - let's go for a drive!

The speed limit is posted at 45, but it should really be a little higher as there are hardly any cross streets, and no schools.
