I give back to my community in my time, talent and treasure. One thing I have been doing is helping non profits who help people in need. A number of these non profits help people with different disabilities.
One such non profit, Richmond Community Services, works with severely mentally and physically handicapped children and young adults. They needed my expertise in organizational development. I was happy to donate to them which included all three--time, talent, and money.
They employed social workers and others to work with the clients but I worked with the executive team. The executive director was very concerned about succession planning because of the burnout factor that causes people to leave.I met with the team numerous times to talk about the organization and succession planning. But then I decided I would work with each individually. I donated a battery of assessments for each of them. Afterward I did individual debriefs. Why? I wanted to help them learn about their strengths and passions and how they each saw their job and how they saw their future.
We developed a very close rapport and they developed an understanding of their role and where they wanted to go next. It was very rewarding to give back to their professionals in this very stressful non profit.
This is one way that I show love by giving back.
