                                      Record Sedona Snowfall!

18 Inches in One Day

This is the video below...

2016

Three years ago in 2016, Sedona had a very spring like February. In most years the Sedona spring kicks in starting February. For example, 17 days had temps in the 70ºs. In fact, 12 days were above 75º. One day hit 80º!

                                          2017 – 2018

In 2017, there were 11 days above 60º and that started early in the month (Feb. 4th). Only 6 days dipped below 32º for a low temp in the morning.  In 2018, There were 39 days between January and February that were above 60º and 26 of those days happened in January.

Snow in January and February was a little over 4 inches for each year.  The snow in Sedona generally will evaporate in less than a day and there is no ice accumulation especially if these areas are in the sun.

                                             El Niño

During an El Niño climate shift, the U.S. Southwest as well as the southern part of the United States experiences a wet and in some places, a colder climate with more snow than usual. The warming of the Pacific Ocean generally develops between April and June and will peak in December and January. The affects of this condition have been noticeable this 2019 winter season.

2019 – An Unusual Winter For Sedona

El Niño is responsible for our extreme cold weather this winter and especially February. Sedona had 5 low temperature readings below 20º with 11.2º the lowest temp so far this year. I am pretty sure this will hold as the lowest temperature. Last year only 1 day at 18.6º was recorded. The high temp for the month was 65.7º, where as last year it was 73.5º.  February had the most snowfall in any recorded month since starting in 2010 at 25.51 inches recorded at the Cottages At Coffeepot weather station.

Wow, Sheri!  That's quite the winter wonderland you had in Sedona.  I'm guessing the snow won't last very long.

It could be Wisconsin !  We have had an unusually cold and very snowy winter this year ...many mild ones in a row so it has taken some adjustment ...as I am sure it has for you as well.

Hi Joe Pryor - I imagine that Sedona tourists that want to go hiking were probably disappointed with having to deal with the snow. But it does not last. It was in the mid 60ºs yesterday.

Hi Gabe Sanders - The snow started evaporating as soon as the sun came out. Actually, as the video was being made.

Sheri, I'm not a fan of snow but, this really is beautiful and the fact that it goes away so quickly makes it even better. I still chuckle at your perfect term - polite snow. Love it!

Hi Sally K. & David L. Hanson - You are so right. It gives us a small taste of what large amounts of snow are like. Funny thing though, For an area that does not have one snow plow, we always have our streets plowed during big storms. They must pre-position the plows from Flagstaff. My husband and I have 4 wheel drive so it does not affect us.

This is great information to share with families moving to the area.

We had some snow on Sunday afternoon. Thankfully, it turned to rain and much of our snow has melted.

Hi Sheri

Love the video! That's pretty impressive weather! I spoke with my aunt who lives in Sedona the other day and she was talking a lot about all the snow...the most she has seen in the 14 years she's been there!

HI Amanda S. Davidson - If the sun did not come out the next day, I might have had to take that term away.  Even in temps below 32º, the snow was evaporating in the sun. It is really strange to see.

HI Grant Schneider - I have been able to turn off the heater and open the doors for fresh air and the daffodils are in full bloom. Last week you could only see about 3 inches of sprouts.

HI Jeff Dowler, CRS - We have been here 15 years and never saw this type of accumulation.  About 4 years ago, there was about 16 inches between 2 days but it was evaporating in between each snowfall.  So the accumulation was not as great.
