Photographing the Wind

Chillin'A high temp of -1 below zero doesn't bother most North Dakotians' but when you add a constant wind speed of 25 Mph and gusts much higher it even gets the attention of the sturdiest of men.

My 1st reaction was typical... Oh Crap! As I looked out the window this afternoon and watched the bare trees blow in the wind I really started to think about what an awesome day it really is.

It's hard to picture or video "cold" but I think you get the picture from this short video. I start out with the flags at the Roosevelt Park Zoo and until I saw this video (as opposed to taking the video) I didn't realize you could see the traffic lights also blowing in the wind. When it's 40 some below zero you also don't expect to see leafless trees swaying in the wind. Even though the sun is not very high in the sky it is very bright reflecting off of the white blanket of snow which made it hard for the camera to focus in on anything. I had hoped to show you the ice hanging from the neighbors chimney but it just didn't work out.

Bob "RealMan" Timm  Forty below zero and you were out taking video. You must have some tough skin. I think when it is 20 degrees it is cold with a wind chill of 10. Thank you for the video

We recently had an ice storm w/ 50+ mph winds and this tree in my yard did not make it , but it gives me an unobstructed view of Sugar Loaf Mnt now. Our temps never reach - 40 ... please let them stay west of me!

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm - Wow!  The real indicator was the wind cups flying around. Our cold weather is behind us.  Short sleeves today mid-60ºs. That sounds like a 100º difference...Yikes!

Hannah Williams I was dressed for it. Even most of my face was covered but what little wasn't covered I had to keep from being exposed to the wind.

Ice storms are really scary Buzz Mackintosh . I've heard of people going days and even weeks without power because of them. That's really bad when it's coupled with subzero temps.

Great description of the scene!!!

Morning Bob.

I got chills just watching the video, I do not understand why people or animals for that matter, would like to live in such a cold environment

Good morning Bob. I tried to photograph the wind this morning too. The snow blows and it is hard to capture.

James Dray you do have to feel for the animals out there when it's this brutal which is why we feed the birds and squirrels. Although there is a ban on feeding the deer in town I would if they regularly would visit our yard but as it is we only see them once or twice a year. As far as humans, there are many benefits to living in such a "private" place. When you only see your neighbors 4 months of the year it makes it more fun to see them. With the innovations in heating it's probably less expensive to heat our homes then it is for many areas to cool theirs. Also you can add clothing to deal with the cold... a person can only take so much off to deal with the heat.

We are supposed to get some snow today Sheila Anderson which is not good because the wind is supposed to be 25 to 40 mph. Although the State boys B Basketball tournament is next week the regional tournament starts today and there is "no travel" advised. It could be a real economical bust for the area.

I haven't ever videoed the wind.  I have however, photographed a pretty interesting sky when the winds were significantly blowing.
