If your aim is to have a healthy lawn that looks good, you need to be prepared to carry out a regular lawn care routine. Taking care of your lawn means that you can spot any problems quickly and deal with them before they really take hold. You can get rid of the bad, such as weeds and thatch, and maintain a good-looking lawn.

Effective lawn care requires an investment of time and effort. You need to do your research and be prepared to do some work to get the results that you want. Read this post and then search other sites that cover lawn care. Here is some of the work that you may need to carry out.

Dealing with weeds

Weeds can appear anywhere in a yard as seeds are scattered in a variety of ways, including on your pet's fur and on your own clothing. The best, and most environmentally friendly, method of dealing with weeds is to pull them up. You need to make sure that you get the whole weed, including the roots.

Getting rid of thatch

Thatch is organic matter that builds up and prevents water and other nutrients from getting into the soil and down to the roots of grass. If you have a problem with thatch on your lawn it may feel springy underfoot and it may start to die in patches.

In order to get rid of thatch, the lawn needs to be scarified. This involves removing the thatch from the lawn using a traditional rake or an electric rake/scarifier. Scarification should be done in spring and/or autumn. It should be carried out when there is plenty of sun and when the weather is not too wet, dry or cold.

Improving drainage

It's not good for a lawn to be unable to drain of water. A waterlogged lawn can be susceptible to serious issues such as the growth of moss. Often, the cause of poor drainage is the type of soil that is present in your yard. You may be able to alleviate the problem by aerating the lawn, using an aerator or a pitchfork. Alternatively, you may have to gradually change the composition of the soil, using organic matter.

You may also find that the design of your yard does not make drainage easy. If this is the case, you may have to create gutters or drains in your yard or you may be able to use water loving plants to get rid of the excess water from the ground.

Mowing correctly

It's important to make sure that you mow your lawn in the right way, in order to help it thrive. It's only necessary to mow a lawn when the grass is growing. This normally starts to happen in spring. Mowing your lawn once a week is a good idea but do not mow if it's raining heavily as the grass can be damaged. Do not cut grass too short; stick to the recommended length for the type of grass you have in your lawn.

Carrying out this regular lawn care helps you to get rid of the bad, like thatch, and maintain a good lawn of healthy grass.
