"The Best Rock Musicians Are The Most Exciting

People In The World"

--- John Daly

Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I like to visit Half Price Books located at 5803 E. Northwest Hwy, Dallas, TX 75214. This is one of the largest Half Price Book locations that I know of in the DFW area. This past Sunday a group of musicians, mainly all strings got together and did a round table, taking turns, each choosing a song, plucking their guitars, bass, banjo, harpsichord, violin, ukelele, and/or drums to start an old familiar good old rock song while others joined in and they sang too! There wasn't one song I didn't know. I counted 23 musicians and boy were they great!!!

I was one of many who grabbed a seat to listen and browse through a pile of books I considered buying. I thought I was just going to be there for a few minutes. I ended up staying there for three and a half hours. Everyone was nodding their heads or tapping their feet to the music. That's how good they were! Inside the Half Price Cafe, the coffee grinder was grinding and the smell of coffee filled the room. Many people continued to wander in to listen too. There was room for everyone!

Music is a great way to connect with other people. In the photo on the top left was the section of books from various wars. All I kept thinking of was "Make love, not war." This group of musicians was the generation that remembered Vietnam. And the guitar player sitting in front of me had his binder of music open with a cover that said The Beatles. It is amazing how Rock N Roll songs drift in and out of our lives, like snowflakes that seemed to fill the airwaves on cold winter nights from long, long ago. Truly, Rock N Roll IS here to stay!

23 musicians and a banjo on top of getting books at half price. I definitely need that place in my life.  Too bad it isn't closer to TN.  Sounds like great fun, thanks for sharing!

I love it when bookstores combine a little art, a little music, and especially coffee to their enterprise.  Half Price books sounds really good to me, Patricia.

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP, this is a rare find. These type of bookstores are very common in NYC, not so much in Central FL.

Roy Kelley and George Souto - I am currently reading "Schlepping Through the Alps, by Sam Apple and I got 10 books on Negotiations (all were less than half price + with coupon cost less than 3 brand new books).

Beth Atalay - It's too bad FL doesn't have book stores like this. With all the seniors in Central FL I think it would be very profitable and filled with people who could meet together for various book clubs or other activities. Plus, it would put children at a great advantage if they could buy affordable books. Half-Price Books in TX has many activities for children and they are always filled up.

Myrl Jeffcoat - Every time I go to a Tourist Place, besides coffee shops, book stores are the most popular! You can get some real treasures there!

Norma J. Elkins - I had so much fun meeting many of the people and listening to great music while leisurely looking through books at my table to decide which ones I wanted to buy.

I hope your area in TN gets a nice book store like this soon. I think every community can benefit by reading more in an environment where you get a lot more for your money, including a Cafe and great entertainment. They also have book signings by local authors and authors who come to speak encouraging people to read.

Nina Hollander - What's great about Half Price Books is there is a wide assortment of new and old books and some charming ones I would never know about otherwise! You can find the most interesting books at places like Half Price and I know where several of these stores are located! Each one seems to have a different atmosphere and different things to offer.

Michael Jacobs - I didn't buy any coffee but the smell was very refreshing! I think you would have enjoyed it too! As the strings played, my heart was strumming to the beat with the chords. It's funny how many of those good old Rock N Roll songs come back to you and the lyrics just come right back as if it was yesterday! What made me tickle was when a musician had his or her turn and they announced the song, in the key they were playing, and most of the time, I didn't recognize the title until the music started and one by one, whoever wanted to sing, sang without judgment. I didn't sing out loud, but I was tapping my feet under the table and my head was bobbing too! It was really, really fun!

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - There is something special about this type of jam session.  I have had the opportunity to experience it also and it still leaves a wonderful feeling in my heart.

I think it is great that you can enjoy this at Half Price Books.  My experience was in Vegas with BB KIng's back ups. So I won't be able to relive this!

Hi Patricia, we don't have Half-Price Books here, unfortunately. I often drop by my local Goodwill Store, where paperbacks are 50 cents to a dollar and hardback just $2. More times than not, I find something I want to read.

Oh, I would SO enjoy spending 3-1/2 hours doing just what you did, Patricia! I love music and books and to sit there, flipping through books to buy while listening to familiar music - just ahhhhhh...

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I have never been to Vegas but hearing your story about being there to listen and experience BB's King back-ups sounds exciting! He is legendary and it must have made you so happy to be there and hear it live!

There is something about the right music that draws us in where it is hard to break and/or leave. It is as if the room explodes with genuine creativity you just don't see or hear every day!

Let's hope we both get to be a  part of more experiences like this into the future.

Nina Hollander - Finding a bargain in a place that sells books is better than the toys we got as kids in a box of Cracker Jacks or if you ever went to a candy store where they sold surprise boxes!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I don't have a stereo system at home or even a radio. When I find opportunities like this, especially when I'm not expecting it, it is such a gift! Plus, you can learn so much just by watching and listening. For example, not one of those musicians at Half Price Books was dressed in glamorous costumes or clothing. They were purely natural in clothing, voice, and personality. I appreciated them so much. Also, there was no host introducing each one. What you saw is what you got - magic of the sounds of music and the fact that it was on a Sunday, they lifted my soul to the highest heavens.

Hi Patricia, that sounds like a great collection of music and books.  I've never seen that done in Austin, where I bought many books when I was living in Texas.  Great stores with amazing finds!  Glad to hear you had such a good time!  Thanks for the post.
