Friday Photo: Cork Tree Oak In Santa Barbara Public Lot!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

We park in this lot every Saturday morning, when we visit the Santa Barbara Farmers Market.  We have watched this tree grow for the last 9 years. It is a cork tree oak.  Its outer bark is used to make corks for bottles, and other cork products.  There are several of these trees in the lot.  Pictured above is a close up of the texture.

Once the bark is peeled off, it takes 9 years to regenerate additional cork for harvest. This tree as well as the others in the lot, will continue to grow under the loving care of the municipality of Santa Barbara.

Happy Friday, wishing you all a great weekend!

I wonder how many corks can be made from one tree? Inquiring minds want to know!

Can't say I've ever seen one of those trees, Alexandra. It's really beautiful. Nothing quite like the beauty of a mature tree in good health.

Walking the camino saw many cork trees with the bark removed as I walked among the vines. Did not know it was 9 years before they were restored back to health.

I think old Cork trees look so wise.  They belong in a Harry Potter movie.  I did not know how the cork was harvested, or that it took so long to regenerate!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel, I've never seen a cork tree and had no idea it took nine years to regenerate, that's a long time.

Sheila Anderson cork is a cottage industry in many of the Mediterranean countries.  Some wineries have gone to screwcaps to lessen their costs, others to glass, and some to plastic which doesn't breathe like cork.  A

Peter den Boer the oldest cork tree is in Portugal.  It is known as the Whistler tree, and in 1991 it produced

  • 2,645.55 pounds of bark were pulled from the tree.
  • That record haul of bark yielded well over 100,000 individual corks.  A

Nina Hollander it is a beautiful tree, and I love the texture and the various colors in it.  This is quite a young tree, and they wait till they are 25 years old before they are harvested.   The ones in the lot will keep growing without harvesting. A

Myrl Jeffcoat As you know, California is full of oaks and some are protected.  They are wise, when it rains they give us chanterelle mushrooms.  By the way, it takes 25 years for a cork tree to be ready to harvest the first time.  A

I like the look of that tree and would want to park under it on a warm day to get some shade.

It sure has a lot of character doesn't it? It's wonderful that the municipality  of Santa Barbara takes good care of these wonderful natural resources.
