When living in a condominium building....you have neighbors. GASP...just in case you didn't know!

And when you need to have work done in your condo (maintenance or remodeling), does it affect your neighbors?

YES!

Now, modern buildings have some systems in place that make things easier, such as a hot water heater replacement. But imagine getting THIS email from your HOA:

Dear Homeowners,

We understand there have been frustration with the lengthy periods of water shut offs, due to water heater replacements.
We have made the decision to limit water heater replacement to two water heaters per building, per day.
We have two more days scheduled, for March 28th and April 4th.  After these dates, we will only allow two units to be replaced per day.

In this particular building, due to it's age, the water has to be shut off to the ENTIRE building when a hot water heater is being replaced. So, if one was being replaced everyday....Shreek! So, they have taken the steps to only allow a certain number of water heaters to be replaced at any given time. (A side note, this is an older building and due to numerous water heater failures, and the subsequent water damage that happened, they have mandated that hot water heaters older than 10 years have to be replaced.)

But maybe you have plans to remodel a bathroom, or install/replace hardwood floors. Well, first off, yes, your neighbors on either side of you, as well as above or below you are going to be hearing that construction noise. And then...there is the elevator.  In a highrise, the freight elevator has to be blocked off to move in construction materials and take out construction debris. This can cause a delay for another resident that may need to move in or out of the building, or have something large delivered to their condo!

See how it all comes together? This is why you will find various rules and regulations covering all of this when you move in or live in a condominium building. And there has to be a process, so that the inconvenience can me minimized to everyone.

But, don't go far. Even hanging numerous pictures on the wall can be disruptive to your neighbor. Especially when you decide to do your decorating at 11PM at night!

Work in your condo does affect your neighbors! Be mindful of them, and follow the rules your HOA has established.

Hello Thom - it's unfortunate when condo owners are unaware or ignore the various regulations that are part of living in a condo unit.
