Wednesday Words Of Wisdom: Compassion As Radicalism Of Our Time!

By

Lately, I (A) have been focused on reading the Dalai Lama's writings. His words make me think, cogitate or ponder as Michael Jacobs would express it.

"Compassion is the radicalism of our time."

Radicalism is defined as: the beliefs or actions of people who advocate thorough or complete political or social reform. Commonly, radicals are associated with activists who will justify violence and hate speech on behalf of a movement they strongly believe in against those who oppose it.

Compassion as the practice of radicalism resonates with us. There is no violence, no hate speech, and no mud slinging.

The Dalai Lama goes on to say, that compassion begins with being compassionate with ourselves first:

"To conquer oneself is a greater victory than to conquer thousands in a battle."

"People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they’re not on your road doesn’t mean they’ve gotten lost."

Dalai Lama

Have a wonderful Wednesday filled with Compassion!

Hi Ron and Alexandra- I agree that compassion seems to have taken a back seat to anger and an unwillingness to compromise. Wishing the Dalai Lama a very long life.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I think we first need to be compassionate with ourselves, when we have that things get so much better.  Ron always says, give yourself the benefit of the doubt, and then it is so much easier to give it to others...It all begins with ourselves.  A

Kathy Streib I think we have to ask ourselves how much compassion do we give ourselves instead of practicing regret, shame and blame?

Good morning, Alexandra and Ron - I have been thinking of a similar subject and your execution and examination of that thought is an excellent one.  The quotes in your post really seem to fit.  PS:  Thank you for the mention.

I am very fond of the Dalai Lama's words and teachings, Alexandra.  I will never forget when I first began to listen to him.  It was in the midst of a documentary where he mentioned that suffering was OK.  Shortly after he made that statement, my phone rang, and the insuing conversation kept me from viewing the remainder of the documentary.  For quite some time I had a lingering question. . .Why would suffering be OK?  Then early one Sunday morning, I was in Old Sacramento, taking pictures before crowds appeared.  I rounded a corner and saw a small group of Tibetan monks step off the Delta King river boat, where they had apparently been lodging.  When they came closer to where I was standing, I stopped and asked them for the answer to the question, "Why is suffering OK?"  The answer came swiftly enough, "Because, it teaches us compassion."  And, the world was set right once again!

Myrl Jeffcoat What an amazing story and so beautiful.  I also think that when we are compassionate with ourselves suffering diminishes.  I have a saleslady that ran into the Dalai Lama as she was walking out of her home her in Santa Barbara.  He was resting against her  garden wall.  She felt his holiness as she put it...they had a sweet exchange of words.  She felt so high, and does everytime she tells the story.  A

In my former profession there was no compassion.  It was a cold hard profession, it took me several years to get adjusted to the real world
