The Carlsbad Art Wall Mural for April 2019 in Carlsbad Village
The newest Carlsbad Art Wall was painted this past weekend, April 5, 6 and 7 by international muralist SLIM (@Slim.art) who is on tour here in the US, heading to LA after Carlsbad.
Be sure to check out his Instagram page.
The mural is titled “Drip Castles” – if you have been to the beach as a child you no doubt made these - appropriately named for the theme of the mural and our beach town, featuring a little girl name Stella. But, per the artist, it is a commentary on the challenges Carlsbad faces (and many others on the coast) with the rising cost of living and housing prices, for those who grew up here and find it more difficult to remain. Here’s what SLIM says.
Carlsbad artist, Bryan Snyder, is the brainchild of the Carlsbad Art Wall, now in its 4th year, beginning in 2015. This project is in cooperation with Senor Grubby’s, a well-known Mexican Restaurant in Carlsbad Village, and the collection of murals over the years has been impressive.
No doubt you have driven by if you live in the area or have visited Carlsbad. Even if you don’t know the official #CarlsbadArtWall name you no doubt have noticed the changing murals on the east-facing wall on Carlsbad Village Drive, just west of the train tracks and easily seen as you head toward the beach.
Carlsbad is known as a growing and changing arts community, with abundant public art (an interactive map). The Carlsbad Art Wall really is a wonderful addition to our expanding and ever-changing arts community, with a new installation several times per year!
Here are some recent Carlsbad Art Wall murals I have enjoyed:
Carlsbad Art Wall January 2019
Carlsbad Art Wall October 2018
I always enjoy seeing each new wall mural, and it’s common to see locals and visitors hanging out to watch the artists at work – I was there this past Friday evening to see the mural in progress.
What a wonderful idea to have beautiful wall art for a few months, giving residents and visitors plenty of time to enjoy these special, but fleeting, public creations.
The #CarlsbadArtWall is a wonderful opportunity for talented artists to showcase their creativity, and a special addition to our Village by the Sea!
