I receive emails with questions and comments on my posts of what what I mean about PageRank.
PageRank is NOT the spot you have on Google searches. It is not where you place when someone types in a keyword search. For instance: if a consumer is on google and types the words, 'Wellington Florida Luxury Homes', we are number 1 and number 2 on that search page that Google returns to that person. That is NOT PageRank.
But PageRank does have something to do with Google's spiders' decision of who to place in that #1 space on that search return page.
PageRank is a ranking system that Google uses to show how relevant you are, in other words, how important you are according to their algorythms.
According to Wikipedia:
"PageRank is a link analysis algorithm which assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web, with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set. ..."
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google PageRank
The name,'PageRank' is a name that is registered and owned by Google. The PageRank is a patented system by Google.
You can check what your PageRank is by installing Mozilla Firefox or Google Tools on your Web Browser's Tool bar. I highly recommend that you use Firefox instead of IE for your Active Rain blogging and internet surfing. You will find that it is much faster and a lot more secure. I wrote a post about why you should be using Firefox.
From there you can do a search for free PageRank add ons. I use Live PR for my add on.
Now, when you first start blogging and building your website you are going to have either no PageRank at all because you are not indexed yet or you are going to have a PageRank of 0.
How do you improve and climb the ladder of PageRank? Through inbound links to your blog and website. You want people who have at least a 2 degree higher PageRank to link to you. I am NOT talking about Link Farming and reciprocal linking. The linking needs to be relevant to your blog or website.
Google weighs the links that are linking to you, sees what they are ranked and thinks, ( metophoriclly speaking) Hmmm, this site that is a PageRank of 8 likes this little bitty PageRank site of 1. Maybe that means this is a good site. Then Google checks out the the PageRank of 8 to make sure, it crawls the site for relevance. Each site that links to you is like a vote for you. Of course it is a bit more complicated than this but this is the simple version and enough to get you started up the ladder of Google PageRank.
If you would like to learn more about linking you can read my post on building internal links on your blog and website. I will be writing a post about getting inbound links shortly so stay tuned.
Sometimes you will see that your PageRank is different from one of your posts to the next. We moved up from a PageRank of 3 to a 4 when Google changed their algorithms and then we went up to a PageRank of 5 on many of our posts.
Happy PageRank Climbing on Google!
