Hangin' Out at Dino's

If you listen to a "classic rock" station long enough, eventually you're going to hear "The Boys Are Back in Town."  It's kind of a rock anthem and it was the most popular song released by the Irish band Thin Lizzy.  Lead singer and bass guitarist, Phil Lynott, was an interesting cat...

Phil was born out of wedlock in 1949 and grew up near Dublin.  Despite the challenges of being mixed race at that time and place, he found solace in music and was singing in bands by his late teens --- with more or less success.  His skills weren't the best and were further complicated when one of the early incarnations of Thin Lizzy essentially cemented the need for him to learn/play bass AND sing.  But...the rest is history.  In 1976, the band released the album "Jailbreak," which contained the hit "The Boys Are Back in Town."

By the early '80's, they were struggling commercially and, as is the case in popular music, the scene changed with the new decade.  Lynott struggled with alcohol and drugs, and substance abuse ultimately took his life in 1986, at the too-young age of 36.

I was a little young to find Thin Lizzy cool in high school but when I listen to them now, there's enough there to garner respect and appreciation.  Still not my cup of Irish tea, sonically, but a throwback to a unique and crazy time.  A lifesize statue of Lynott stands in Dublin today and if I'm ever in that city, I'll make a point to see it.  The band's attitude and legacy warrants it.

Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak,
