New Housing Permits, Starts, & Completions March 2019

On April 19, 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits dropped 1.7% to 1,269,000 units in March of 2019 from 1,291,000 units in February of 2019, and declined 7.8% from 1,377,000 in March of 2018. Single family building permits down 1.1% to a rate of 808,000 units in March of 2019, from 817,000 units in February of 2019, and there were 425,000 multifamily building permits issued in March of 2019.

Nationwide housing starts lost 0.3% to 1,139,000 units in March of 2019, from 1,142,000 units in February of 2019 and fell 14.2% from 1,327,000 units in March of 2018. Single family starts decreased 0.4% to a rate of 785,000 units in March of 2019 from 788,000 in February of 2019, and there were 337,000 multifamily building starts in March of 2019.

Nationwide housing completions lower 1.9% to 1,213,000 units in March of 2019 from 1,313,000 units in February of 2019, but higher 6.8% from 1,229,000 units in March of 2018. Single family completions increased 11.9% to a rate of 938,000 units in March of 2019, from 838,000 units in February of 2019, and there were 364,000 multifamily completions in March of 2019.
