The proposed expansion of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame would allow the museum to host indoor concerts while keeping exhibits open to the public.

Tim Offtermatt, the Rock Hall’s vice president for finance, told City Council on Tuesday that the $35 million expansion will include interior performance space that will not interfere with museum-goers.

“When we have live performances indoors (now), we have to shut the museum down,” Offtermatt told council’s Development, Planning and Sustainability Committee.  The Planned Expansion would connect the Rock Hall to the adjacent Great Lakes Science Center in North Coast Harbor via a multi-level structure built into the hillside between the two museums so as not to obstruct views of Lake Erie.

“One of the things we were interested in maintaining is the sight lines from the downtown to the water and from the water into the downtown area.

Before the expansion plans can proceed, the Rock Hall will need City Council approval of a lease for the city-owned hillside property. The Development Committee signed off on the project Tuesday. The full City Council could vote as soon as Monday to allow Mayor Frank Jackson’s administration to negotiate the lease.
