September Helpful Hints for Homeowners

By
Real Estate Agent with Chartwell Realty, LLC Missouri & Kansas

Each month the Sandi Reed Real Estate Group will provide you with a list to keep you on track with those essential home repairs. We want to remind you that maintaining your home does not have to be overwhelming, but it does require some consistent attention.

This month we begin preparation for the Fall season. Some of these projects will only take a few minutes but can be potentially life-saving.

#1     Monitor and Clean the Gutters

As leaves fall, they can clog your gutters and downspouts. Examine the gutters to insure they are clean and free from leaks. Loose gutters should be attached. If the gutters are too small for your home, you may consider installing wider gutters.

#2     Have Air Conditioner and Furnace Serviced

Twice a year you should have a technician service your heating and air conditioning. Preventative maintenance will keep your units running efficiently, saving energy and saving on energy costs.

#3     Have Fireplace Professionally Cleaned

A clean chimney is imperative for safe operation. Nests can be built, and corrosion can build up, creating a fire hazard. Have the chimney cleaned prior to starting that first fire.

#4     Install Carbon Monoxide Detectors

There should be a working carbon monoxide detector on each level of the home. Make sure you have one close to any gas operated appliances as well as gas furnace.

#5     Continue 5-Step Lawn Care Program

Fall is the best time to promote root system growth throughout the lawn, helping the grass grow thicker. As leaves fall you will need to remove them before applying a fall renovation fertilizer.

Fall is the ideal time to seed your lawn. Fescue can be seeded now through the end of September. Bluegrass can be seeded as late as mid-October.

We hope these tips keep you on track. If you have any other questions regarding real estate in Lee’s Summit or anywhere in the greater Kansas City area, give Sandi a call at 816-877-8732, or visit  www.SandiReed.com. Licensed in both Missouri and Kansas.

I really like how this series could be used as a non-stessful checklist. Like yu said home repairs are overwhelming and trying to make lists can get backed up. Having monthly checklists breaks it up and setting them up by seasonal changes makes it even more helpful. I liekd how you woud service your AC now, so next year when summer kicks in again its ready to go! A littl ebit prep saves stress and doing thiings off season (well its pretty hot now so not totally off season) saves you money as demand is lower.

In the Midwest it can turn from hot to cold in 24 hours. Having the a/c & furnace up and running on a moment's notice is crucial... at least for me. :)
