Close the Toilet, We Do Not Need To See Inside

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Evers & Co.

Since I was a child my mother always told me to put the toilet seat down. For good reason, it is not attractive. Even for the cleanest of toilets. This lesson should carry over to our real estate photography and open houses. I also believe that the furry cover and rug should be removed as well. Make the room clean and the room will show much better.

The photos enclosed,  show my point clearly.

No doubt the closet seat looks better and the fury seat belongs in a 1968 Chevy impala not a germy bathroom YUK!.

Yes, and please don't leave anything on the inside of them either.

Thank you,

I learned an interesting pointer from an appraiser.  You can find out the age of a home by lifting the cap of the tank.  In it, there is a stamp of the year the toilet was manufactured and installed.  Of course if it was remodeled, at least you have the date too!

I actually saw an MLS photo where the agent took a straight-on "blue water" shot.....Yeah, that "2000 Flushes" makes me want to buy it!

Thank you for reminding about this.  I see so many homes during showings and open houses that the seat is not closed.

Ah, yes!  Those toilet photos!  Unless it's a Toto in a fabulously renovated spa bath, I tend to leave them out.  And blue water shots are pretty gross!

Piers,

This is one of the things that bugs me to no end!  I don't understand why certain people don't see this as a problem.  Especially when you are trying to sell a home it is important for the bathrooms to look clean and prestine.  Somehow having the seat up just reminds people of exactly what the toilet is used for and it suddenly becomes a turn off!  When selling your house or just living in it, when not in use, put the seat down!  Thanks for bringing attention to this very serious matter!

Welcome to AR,  since you are a photography specialist, what is your take on just leaving toilet photos out altogether.  Unless it is a very special bathroom, why do you need them?

Why do we even need a picture of a toilet?  Doesn't every bathroom have one?  Take pictures of the custom made Italian mosiac tile in the shower!

I am in DC, so most of our homes average $700,000s. I most often have no room to highlight bathrooms at that price. For an 11x17 fact sheet, it contains about 11 photos, 1 front, 4 bdrs, 1 liv, 1 fam, 1 kit, 1 basement and a few garden pics on the back for color. Unless it is a refinished master bath or a interesting vintage, say subway tile or just a well done one, I leave them out.

For on-line my agents do as they choose.

Toilet photos we see often, if you have to have it, have it down.

I see this all the time, and I'm shocked agents don't know better.

I agree.  Unless the bath is extra nice for the price range it is in, don't put the pictures in.  The pictures are to help sell the house,,,

I am not sure how you would not have 5 other pics that are better. And this has to be one of the show pieces. Just do not used it. Or if this is your best pic the home is a teardown.
