Many of us have blogged about gas and oil prices. The rest of us have at least talked about it.

But what if we were talking about donuts instead? If Krispy Kreme (Dunkin' Donuts, if you'd rather) was the only donut manufacturer in the United Sates because it was too expensive or too much trouble to fight through the years of regulatory compliance ("red tape") for others to get into the game - or other people just hadn't considered starting such a company, would donut consumption rise to the physical limits of Krispy Kreme - even if donuts went to $10 each as an unsuccessful attempt to quell demand - without anyone else deciding to start producing donuts? I think not. Someone would find a way to produce a quality donut for less and to deal with or comply with all of the regulations along the way - probably expedited at that.

It's competition that will drive down gas and oil prices, not a drop in demand.

BLR Guy, what a concept! I wonder which flavors or styles would work best?

Now if we could only get REAL competition in place in the Gas and Oil markets as opposed to the legalized and government-driven collusion that exists today, we might have a shot at keeping prices in check...  Too bad that will probably never happen since most of the decision makers that could make it happen make personal windfall profits under the system currently in place.  Kind of a fox minding the henhouse system, huh?

Steve, real competition would be nice. Better still would be allowing that competition to design and implement the delivery systems. Drill, explore, build, mine, refine, innovate.

Steve~ Maybe the people that could fix the gas problem aren't really affected by the gas prices because they have too much money to start with!!  Who knows, but the whole thing is like a nightmare for lots of people!  Maybe Freddie Kruger is involved............

Steve...

We can live without donuts, but not petroleum. Everything we purchase on a day to day basis depends on it! We dd not learn from the past. The bigger the better, we move huge amounts of metal to get to work!

Vicki, the gas "problem" can't be fixed until Congress decides that it can or we all band together and change the complexion of Congress. I don't think either one is going to happen. I wonder though what would really happen if we woke up one day soon to the realization that we had to drill in Alaska - which by the way the Govenor is all for. Still probably wouldn't happen.

Richard, the donut story was an analogy. As for gas, I agree that we did not learn from the 70s that we were living on borrowed time to keep buying oil from OPEC. It is really unfathomable that we can't - in the true spirit of capitalism - drill new wells, mass produce synthetic oil, liquify coal on a large scale, build dozens of nuclear plants, establish wind farms, and much, much more. But then someone would be be offended by it and we'd be where we are right now.
